Designer Crush: 8000 Nerves

In 2010, four Los Angeles women decided to combine their talents and create a clothing line in the hopes of empowering girls around the world to rock their individual style. Their line, 8000 Nerves, is the latest and greatest addition to our roster of indie designers, and you’ll find its pieces are perfect for this season, and many seasons after! We caught up with one of the 8000 Nerves gals, designer Efi Green, to chat about everything from their musical muses to the most important lessons they’ve learned in the biz.

Tell us about your current line!
We’re working mainly with soft woven fabrics, bright colors, prints, bows, [and] 60’s and 70’s silhouettes that are feminine and girlie. We want to make clothes that inspire happiness, and for our girl’s life to be colorful! With our designs, we strive to select quality fabric at a cost effective price and hope that our collections complement the great things in life.

Who or what are your inspirations?
There are four of us, and our inspirations come differently. Overall, the inspiration and intention for 8000 Nerves is growth. Through this process, we have found that openness and laughter, in addition to gaining and sharing knowledge, are most inspiring!

We also believe in not being afraid to stand out; the pink elephant in the room never caused any harm. Be the pink elephant who sings along with all the grey guys! We’re inspired by people who are true to themselves, helping others, shapes, colors, humor, fairy tales, music, art, vintage clothing… and so much more!

How long has 8000 Nerves been a dream of yours, and how long has it been a reality?
The four of us have been best friends from the very beginning with the urge to spread a powerful message. The concept for 8000 Nerves emerged while we took a late night drive to the beach one evening, and sang out loud to Janis Joplin. It was this moment of soulful freedom that set the tone for our future. In 2010, 8000 Nerves was officially born with the intention to create clothes that are filled with happiness, color, and freedom.

What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned since starting your own line?
a. You can’t climb a mountain alone. There is so much that goes into having your own brand that doing it solo just doesn’t make any sense!

b. Anything is possible. There is no excuse for not trying. We have so many things to say to the world, and are embracing the opportunity that we have been given to express them!

c. Be patient! Great things are most definitely not easy to come by. Keeping a positive attitude will open up wonders of opportunities.

d. Balance your own creative style without looking at trends.

You guys are behind the dresses on The Like’s Release Me album cover! If you could style one musician, who would it be and why?
Can we choose two? Zooey Deschanel because she seems very quirky and free-spirited. We’re inspired by people who don’t take themselves too seriously. Janis Joplin because she’s iconic, refused to compromise, and wasn’t afraid to be herself. She wasn’t a gorgeous starlet, but rather a person people could relate to.

What is your favorite piece from this collection?
Depends on the day.

I find their mission statement really lovely: “the intention to create clothes that are filled with happiness, color, and freedom.” The clothes really live up to that and are really beautiful. I love that they have a true 60s/70s feel to them.

PS Modcloth, please fix your spelling – it’s Janis Joplin, not Janice.

Oh man. We can’t believe we let that misspelling slide! Thanks for catching it, Glassy!

I Love these clothes. I want them. Unfortunately, they are not for me. One more reason to be envious of skinny, tall and flat chested girls who will look great in these clothes.
