Designer Crush: Gentle Fawn

Awesome earth-tone pieces for your autumn enjoyment: Painted Lane Dress, Travel in Packs Backpack, and How You Dune Coat.

With a passion for fashion design and affinity for mid-century antiques, Gentle Fawn owners Daniel and Carla Hogg found their muse in the form of a keepsake ceramic fawn they picked up during a thrifting trip in 2003. Not only did this object-of-affection inspire their now-international brand’s name, but the quiet creature’s presence still serves as a reminder of the company’s creative beginning amidst the buzz of their Vancouver workspace.

We inquired about what other people, places, and things inspire their cool collections.

Some snooping around Gentle Fawn’s office includes an appreciative shout-out to the intern they adore, shelves of thrifted finds, and a glimpse of the star fawn figurine, herself.

Other than the ceramic fawn we adore now, too, who and what inspires the brand’s designs?

We love Audrey Hepburn for her style and charm, and we’ve always been influenced by art culture: film, fashion, and music.

Who have you been listening to or watching lately?

Beach House, Little Joy, Lykke Li, The Byrds, M. Ward, She & Him, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Mazzy Star, The Sundays, Neko Case — a bunch! We also habitually discuss The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and The Bachelor Pad –  joint office obsession, of sorts.

Can you describe the workspace for us?

It’s very open, with high ceilings, a view of the city and mountains, and it’s only about a 3-minute walk to the ocean.

A few photos from the designer duo’s trips to Hong Kong, Ibiza, and Venice.

What places have influenced the brand?

We’re always traveling. Some of our favorites have been Spain, Italy, Hong Kong, Paris, NYC, San Francisco, and L.A..

Many of Gentle Fawn’s designs are inspired by both natural and urban environments. How so?

We take the season’s key silhouettes, and combine them with earthy elements like florals and feathers. Creating functional, modern designs with a touch of the natural world is our focus.

Gentle Fawn’s most recent photoshoot took place at Daniel & Carla’s Vancouver home. Choose your fave piece here

How many people make up the company?

We have 14 employees and 1 intern in the office. We’re like a family. We really care about one another.

What types of food do you-all nosh on when working? Any favorite take-out spots?

We love Nuba, a local Lebanese restaurant that’s only a few blocks away. Chronic Tacos is another office fave, and of course, sushi!
