Designer These Creatures Craft Somethin’ Special

Mount the Mushroom and Board Hook on your wall for a fun, functional look that screams MC!

Not long after we began carrying the quirky metalwork of These Creatures, our Apartment team knew it wanted to collaborate with this brother-sister design duo to create an exclusive décor piece featuring ModCloth’s twin toadstools!

Siblings and co-owners Andrew and Amy Finkel were the perfect people to partner with, says Apartment Buyer Marne. Not only are their colorful products the perfect way to brighten up your apartment, they’re also crafted using sustainable practices in Andrew’s Seattle workshop.

“They’ve always been one of our favorites at the New York International Gift Fair,” says Marne. “They’re hilarious. One time, we witnessed them have a music battle with a booth selling baby stuff. One guess as to who won! Being on the same wavelength with a vendor is super important to us, especially when creating a customized item like this one.”

We got a virtual, behind-the-scenes look at how the hooks on our site went from digital sketches to door-ready décor pieces.

Every design is made in These Creature’s Seattle space, using a combination of Photoshop, Google SketchUp, CAD programs, permanent market, and tons of cardboard. “Then, we convince the machine to cut what we tell it to,” Andrew says.

Next steps include smoothing edges, a couple quick cleans with a wire brush on an angle grinder, more smoothing with an abrasive disk, and then they’re off to the powder coaters to achieve a glossy finish and durable color coating before holes are drilled for hanging.

Do those kitty hooks look familiar? Fun fact: they were made from scrap metal with Andrew’s bare hands. Photos courtesy of Penn Miniken.

Thanks for the tour, Andrew, Amy, and co.!
