September is a month of changes — the beginning of fall, the first faint traces of a chill in the air, and the debut of rich, transitional colors in nature. Something about it carries a lot of nostalgia, too, hearkening back to high school homecoming games, train trips to admire the fall foliage, and cozying up in cabins…

Our September signature collection is all about these wistful glimpses of the past mixed with pops of the present. We focused on rich and rustic hues like reds, oranges, and blues, distinctive details like quilting and piping, and incredibly touchable textures like chiffon and corduroy. Read on to see our Fashion Director’s favorite picks and what makes them so special:

Favorite Easy Outfit:

“This mottled chenille sweater in a cropped cut looks great over our favorite patchwork cord skirt and deer-printed top.

When it gets colder, I’ll wear this look with our fantastic reversible jacket. Inspired by a vintage piece, it features heart-shaped quilting, two coordinated prints, and mustard piping.”

Favorite ‘Vintage Varsity’ Look:

See above for notes about the cardigan.

“This ruffled top is super-sweet, but it can also get sexy, depending on how you want to wear it.

And this update to a classic kilt is so great: the fabric is extra-soft and light enough that you can wear it when it’s still a bit warm (but you want to feel like it’s fall). And I love the kilt pin, the buckles at the waist, and the frayed edge detail. There’s a hint of asymmetry in the sweep of the skirt, so it’s preppy with a little attitude.”

Favorite Fall Fundamental:fall fashion inspiration from modclothPictured: Jam Girl Dress, Chenille the Deal Cardigan in Black, Stands to Parisian Scarf

“Checks, please. This classic buffalo plaid dress is just begging to be paired with tights and ankle booties. It’s a foundational fall piece that you can build so many different looks around, no matter what the temperature may be.”

Favorite ‘Overall’ Look:fall fashion inspiration from modclothPictured: Fall Potluck Overalls in Forest, What Comes to Stride Boot in Tapestry, Ruffle Foraging Top in Portobello, A Taste for Finery Things Necklace

“These ModCloth label corduroy overalls are really soft and velvety, so they are easy to dress up with this sweet printed sheer chiffon top (layered over one of our lace bralettes) and these amazing brocade boots.”

Favorite Pants:fall fashion inspiration from modclothPictured: Velvet En Vogue Pants, Ruffle Foraging Top in Enoki, A Taste for the Finery Things Necklace, Haute and About Bootie in Black, Undisputed Class Watch in Petal and Rose Gold, Darling Detective Work Cape in Paprika

“Dress ‘em down with a vintage tee and boots or or dress them up with one of our chiffon tops and special heels.

This cape (while not part of our signature collection) is also super cute!”

Favorite Separates Combo:fall fashion inspiration from modclothPictured: Whirl’s Greatest Skirt in Cayenne, Wouldn’t Knit Be Nice Sweater in Teal, Remarkable Sparkle Necklace, Struts and Bolts Bootie

“I also love our velvety corduroy skater skirt in this rich pumpkin color. It’s great bare-legged earlier in fall, and with tights later in the season. And it comes in navy and forest green, too.

Our double surplice sweater is super-soft and flirty over this skirt, but it’s also easy to toss over a fit & flare dress, bellbottoms, or overalls.”

Favorite Boho/Moto Look:fall fashion inspiration from modclothPictured: Full Steam Trailhead Jacket, Loop, Twirl, and Arch Dress, A Flounce of Common Sense Necklace, A Bloom for Two Heel in Black

“In the same soft pumpkin corduroy [as the skirt pictured above], we’ve reinterpreted the classic moto jacket. This jacket has our signature navy crane print lining, which will peek out if you turn up the sleeves!

Susan (our Founder and Chief Creative Officer) loves this maxi dress. It’s a lurex chiffon, so little bits of gold shine through the dense floral print. The sleeves are full and lapped, and it drapes really prettily around the arm. You could wear this to an event or for a night out (especially with the great embroidered heels we shot it with), or with boots and our cozy cardi for a more casual look.”

Favorite Work Dress:

“This trench coat dress is so easy. You could even wear it open over other looks as a layering piece.”
