As you know, we kicked off our first-ever #fashiontruth campaign in September as a means to encourage everyone to show off their beauty and uniqueness in a photo. We were blown away with submissions and selecting our October spotlight was difficult, but we did it! Emily (that’s her above) showed us her #fashiontruth, and we couldn’t help but swoon for her happy-as-can-be snapshot. She is our October spotlight, and we even named a product after her — the All About Emily top. So let’s meet her, shall we?
Emily is a wedding photographer who lives in Oakland, California with her husband, Ed, and their dog, Oppenheimer. She enjoys cooking, sewing, gardening, and generally making the world a prettier place. Emily would love to be a Jedi knight, but frankly prefers the Starfleet uniform.
How would you describe your sense of style?
I like clothes that are cheerful, comfortable, and somewhat classic. I love the clean lines of the 1940s-1950s, and I love prints and colors that bring a smile to my face.
Do you have a fashion icon or icons? If so, who are they?
Audrey Hepbrun, hands down. Everything she wore was so ladylike yet playful, and I like that a lot of pieces she wore were basic and easy to coordinate with other clothing. No fuss, all gorgeous.
If you could live in one outfit, and one outfit alone, what would it be?
Haha, probably the outfit I’m wearing right now: black capris with a little stretch, a yellow tank top with a fun elephant print, and a cozy cardigan that I can bundle up in, paired with my black Keds – the most comfortable shoes in the world.
What factors help you pick out what you’re going to wear for the day?
The weather and the day’s activities: If I’m going out with friends for a meal or drinks, I’ll tend to dress up a bit more in something colorful, whereas if I’m working and I know I’ll be walking around and carrying heavy equipment, I’ll dress more for comfort and in darker clothes.
What is your #fasiontruth?
Fashion is for everyone! Just because you might not “look like a model” doesn’t mean you can’t dress like one!
As a professional photographer, how do you encourage your clients to become comfortable with themselves during shoots?
One of the things I do is talk NONSTOP. Even if I’m working with a shy, quiet couple, if I keep talking and telling them stories and jokes, they’ll be distracted by the actual photo taking and look more relaxed in the pictures. I also totally mess with them and ask them to do really odd poses, and then I tell them that I’m totally kidding, and the laughing afterward always makes for a great shot!
How do you encourage them to find their #fashiontruth during shoots?
I just tell clients to wear something that they are comfortable and feel fabulous in, and to take the opportunity to dress up a bit if that’s their jam. If they feel awesome in their outfits, that will show in their confidence in the photos. I also ask them to bring at least a change or two, plus some layers so we can play with a few different looks, so in case one outfit isn’t really working for them, they’ll have room to change things up and be happy with the end result.
We love your sense of style — and your smile — do you enjoy being in front or behind the camera more?
Thank you! Up until recently I hated having my photo taken, so I usually hammed it up and would look like a total goof (not that I don’t do that now!), but I decided I needed to get over that and just enjoy having my photo taken and like the resulting photos. That being said, I much prefer to be behind the camera, just because it’s such a fun job and I get to meet so many cool people, and I really love when I can make someone who claims to not be photogenic (pretty much everyone) and make them fall in love with their own beauty in their photos.
If you could bring any prop to a photoshoot that would instantly make your clients be more comfortable and at ease, what would it be?
Honestly? A puppy. Everyone loves puppies! Plus, it’d give them something to focus on so the photos will be more candid. I always encourage clients to bring their pets to their engagement shoots!
