Wanna hear some really amazing news? Be the Buyer — the virtual trade show that lets you, the customer, choose which designs get produced, then sold on ModCloth — recently counted its five millionth vote. Wow! This momentous occasion certainly calls for a celebration, right? Right! So, to commemorate this amazing ModCloth milestone, we’ll be honoring the people who helped us reach it.
Today, we’d like to introduce you to Suzy, our featured Top Tastemaker. This wonderfully witty woman took the time to tell us all about her terrific self, and share her thoughts about democratizing fashion through our Be the Buyer program.
Suzy ecstatically exhibits her Chief Executive Outfit Dress!
Where are you from?
Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
What do you like to do? Any hobbies?
I’m a bit of a shopaholic, of course (understatement of the year). I like: thrifting, “discovering” indie bands, playing “Settlers of Catan” (when I can find willing players), learning about history, reading, Leonardo DiCaprio, and True Blood (not that those last two keep me “busy” in any way, haha).
How would you describe your style?
It changes a lot. I like to decide on a character or theme for that evening and go with it. I often choose “pretty” and play with lots of lace and pink tones, but a lot of times my theme will be 80s and I pick bold patterns and colors. Other themes have been sailor-inspired, 50’s housewife, [and] 40’s secretary.
Which Be the Buyer item have you recently purchased? How do you style it?
The last Be the Buyer item I purchased was the Chief Executive Outfit Dress. I plan on wearing it to a wedding with a fascinator, black Mary Janes, and the From Ear to Eternity Earrings (the wedding is around Halloween, so I think it will be appropriate?).
How did you feel when you found out that an item you voted in favor of was picked for production?
Celebratory! I’m pretty open to most ideas of clothing though. I vote thumbs up on a lot of the clothing in Be the Buyer and have over 1,000 items on my “Loved” items on ModCloth. I just love too many things. I’m an equal opportunity clothing lover.
What do you like most about Be the Buyer?
I like the comments and the feedback from the other participants! I’m learning now to read some of the comments before submitting my vote. I’ll look at a piece and be like, “YA! That’s fab!” But then I’ll read comments saying how people would improve it in one way or another and realize, “Oh, maybe this isn’t a very quality garment.”
What do you look for in an item when you decide to either ‘pick it’ or ‘skip it’?
I used to look at price — and price alone — as I have a non-budget to work with, but I realized that that isn’t a fair way to assess clothing. You get what you pay for. You choose the cheap garments, you’re going to get cheaper fabrics and the workmanship may not be up to snuff. I try to appraise garments whether or not I truly like them and, if I had money, would I want it? If it’s a yes, then it’s a pick.
Thanks so much, Suzy, for helping make Be the Buyer such a success!
Now, to keep this revelry rolling, we’d like you to meet another marvelous, virtual buying maven who helped us hit our five million vote mark. Say hello to Monica!
Monica models the Very Vital Maxi & Big Cat on Campus Necklace.
One of our most frequent voters, Monica says that she checks Be the Buyer every single morning to leave her two cents, and loves how the program allows customers to feel like they’re a part of our company. What picked piece made Monica absolutely melt? It was the 1930s-inspired Irresistible Enchantress Dress!
Curious what other fashions make Suzy’s and Monica’s hearts feel all aflutter? Check out this carefully curated category, full of all their favorites.
