Whoa, Mama! Maternity Style That’s Super Chic

Pregnancy is a joy, but dressing your ever-changing body in a way that still expresses your style? Sometimes that’s a little less fun. For tips on how to do maternity YOUR way, we turned to ModStylist and mommy-to-be, Joanna. Check out her inspiring outfits and awesome advice!

Whoa, Mama! Materinity Style That's Super Chic

  • Learn what fabrics make you feel most comfortable. When it doubt, go for stretch, stretch, and more stretch! Clothing with a bit of give will grow with your body and keep you feeling comfy.
  • Look for trapeze-shaped pieces, which drape effortlessly over your body, or empire silhouettes with waistlines that sit comfortably above your baby bump.
  • Use structured layers to give shape to flowy frocks and tops. Try adding a blazer or fitted jacket to your ensemble. Or, add a belt above your baby bump to create an hourglass silhouette.
  • Finally, jazz up neutral hues or simple pieces with statement-making accessories that express your style.

Pre pregnancy I was a tiny skinny pinny so had a lot of fun wearing those drapery floaty things that had never suited me before. Then later on in my pregnancy I started wearing very slinky close fitting stretchy clothing. I felt so proud of my perfect baby bump (which only truly began to show at 7 months) I wanted people to be able to see it!
My favourite outfit was a short slinky knit dress with scoop neck, indigo tights and a magenta cropped cardigan finished off with a vintage brooch. Sounds garish but it looked darn cute!

Thank you so much for sharing this, Andy! Your favorite outfit sounds super one-of-a-kind, and would most certainly appeal to all Modgals! We are all for both the drapey layers and the more fitted and structured pieces to show off one’s adorable baby bump. <3

I’m 6 months pregnant and desperately trying to keep myself out of the sweatpants / hoodie rut I cam creeping into. Hopefully when the weather warms up I will be more adventurous!

But my favourite pregnant outfits so far are a knee length bright orange with white narrow stripes dress with short sleeves and a scoop neck, with black tights and booties for now (bare legs and flip flops come summer) which perfectly clings around my bump; or a tunic style empire waisted top with leggings.

Though I succumbed and bought some maternity jeans – shopped around to find a pair which fit perfectly around the bum and legs to look chic – and they have upped the weekend hoodie game!

Congratulations on your little nugget, Charli! 🙂 You must be so excited to welcome your sweetheart into the world – and it seems like you manage to stay comfortable and chic while awaiting the big day! Although sweatpants and a hoodie are not always bad, I really love how you shared your perfect pregnancy outfits. The way you describe your orange striped dress has us wanting one for sure. <3
