Plan the Perfect Mother’s Day Brunch with These 4 Blogger-Approved Ideas

Story by ModCloth friends are some of the most motivated peeps we know, so we are continuing our exciting year-long campaign highlighting them. We’re calling it #inspiredbyyou, and it’s just that — useful, whimsical blog content that’s inspired by our ModCloth customers, readers, and beyond. Each month, we’re tapping fabulous storytellers and asking them to share their expertise right here on the blog. What better way to celebrate the ModCloth community than to showcase the incredible work being created by them? This month we connected with the wonderful Aileen Allen the blog At Home In Love.

at home in love

Hello ModCloth readers! I’m Aileen, from the interiors and lifestyle blog At Home in Love. I live in Seattle, and I love decorating, DIY projects, thrift store treasures, and cheesy jokes.

Mother’s Day is May 11th, so I thought it would be fun to share some ideas for how to make a really special Mother’s Day brunch. I envisioned a simple, intimate event with close family — but of course, if you’d rather go all out and invite a big guest list, you certainly can! The most important thing is to make sure that your mom feels pampered and loved … and that she doesn’t do any dishes. So let’s get started.

Plan out your menu
You don’t have to do anything really fancy if that sounds overwhelming. Just think of what your mom loves, and go from there. To make even the simplest of foods seem more special, serve them in a fun, quirky way … like arranging bacon into hearts before you put it in the oven, or cutting up honeydew with heart-shaped cookie cutters.

Set the table
Put a little more effort into the table settings than you normally do. Lay down a pretty tablecloth, make place cards, and use her favorite serving dishes. Don’t just set a box of donuts and a carton of orange juice on the table. Take the time to put the donuts on a cake stand and pour the orange juice into a pitcher. For place cards, you don’t need to do anything elaborate. I just used some small clothespins and blank business cards. Even if you’re having a small family brunch where place cards aren’t technically necessary, extras like that will make it feel more special than an everyday meal. Chargers, cloth napkins, and using the “good” silverware will also make the table look extra nice.

Make sure you have flowers
Every woman loves flowers (duh!), and no one deserves a pretty bouquet more than your mom. So be sure to have some fresh flowers on the table that she can keep and enjoy afterward. Again, this doesn’t have to be an expensive or elaborate arrangement. I just picked up some poppies and ranunculus at the grocery store and mixed them with some ruffly tulips that from my front yard. You don’t even have to use a real vase, either — a coffee can or a mason jar work just as well. If you’re intimidated by arranging flowers, my advice would be to stick with just one or two types of flowers, and don’t pick a really huge vase. The simplest arrangements are often the loveliest, anyways!

Don’t let Mom clean
This is crucial. Your mom likely takes care of you all the time, so this is your day to take care of her. Make sure she sits back and relaxes, and don’t let her lift a finger to clean!

+ As you can see, a Mother’s Day brunch doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate to be special. Putting some extra effort into the little details will go a long ways!
