Sleek Silhouette: What to Wear Under a Wiggle Dress

Bling in a New Year Dress-1With holiday party season in full swing, we often find ourselves standing before our closets, deep in thought about which dress to don for each seasonal occasion. Shall it be a chic sheath? A fabulous fit-and-flare? Or a flapper-inspired shift? While choosing the right dress can be a daunting task, choosing what to wear beneath that holiday dress can be equally enigmatic.

If you’ve been stumped on which pretty undergarments to pair with all the different dress silhouettes available on ModCloth (and, likely, in your closet), we’re here to help. This week we’re kicking off a special silhouette styling series, starting with that classic vintage style staple: the wiggle dress. Wiggle dresses and sheath dresses often share a similar, body-skimming silhouette, with wiggle dresses narrowing from hip to hem. These body-celebrating styles exude Old Hollywood glamour, and are perfect for a special evening out, or an elegant New Year’s Eve celebration.

To achieve a flawless foundation beneath these close-fitting frocks, choose a body-hugging slip, like the Elegant Underpinnings Slip Corselet. This vintage-inspired, shapewear slip includes paneling, which hugs you in all the right places, ensuring that your dress falls just as it should. To nix lines, add a pair of high-waisted panties beneath your slip, and clip a pair of sheer, thigh-high stockings to the attached garter clips.

I already owned the dress and purchased this exact slip to wear under it after seeing the recommendation on the blog. Unfortunately, the straps on the slip do not line up with the sleeves of the dress: they sit much closer together than the dress sleeves and there is no way to make them line up. Perhaps a similar slip would work, but don’t take this post’s advice literally and purchase this exact slip/dress combination. Very disappointed that I did.
