As we enter this year’s Fleet Week, the popular nautical trend may feel overplayed and lackluster. We found some street style mavens who show us how to navigate the waters of that classic style without looking washed up!
Chictopia user districtofchic‘s follows all the print-mashing rules necessary to cultivate a sleek ensemble. Her look has all the traditional qualities of nautical style, yet still seems trendsetting and new, thanks to her fearless segue into the world of contrast. A vibrant vintage skirt paired with a sweet and simple blue striped tank can do no wrong in my book.
Aimee‘s approach to nautical style is seriously chic and flawless. The contrasting nature of her black and white striped blazer is mirrored in a stark white dress and black buckle boots. Aimee’s look proves that nautical style, when paired up with a flirty frock and tough boots, can be innovative, vivid, and totally unique.
Yuri’s take on the current nautical trend is such an inspiration – instead of overpowering her look with sea influenced accessories, she’s chosen to accentuate her striped top by playing with proportions. I love the way Phil Oh, of Street Peeper, captured her unbalanced sleeves – her fully sleeved right arm, with covetable bangles, seems to purposefully contrast against the rolled up, bare left arm. Intentional? Probably not – but, it’s a look I love, all the same!
It’s hard to say what I like best about Tuuli‘s outfit. With the inclusion of a vintage scarf and a simple striped tee, the 13-year-old style savant managed to turn a reliable ensemble (black blazer, black pants, black boots) into an aesthetic masterpiece. The next time I’m feeling blasé about my sea-inspired look, I’ll follow Tuuli’s innovative example and throw on a tailored jacket with a lively scarf!
