Born in an iota of an Iowan town, morphed into the darling of French New Wave cinema, and parted the supposed victim of an invasive FBI initiative, actress Jean Seberg experienced a thunderstorm of complexities the minute she hit stardom. It was a tumult to which Seberg’s style – a cool display of simple, easy-going elegance – stood in adamant opposition. Woven through with oversized knits, and pared-down layers, Serberg’s fashion is ideal for inspiration, particualrly as fall sashays our way.

With her menswear-inspired button-downs, clean-cut cardigans, Breton-striped shirts, and simple trousers, Seberg oscillated between boyish and librarian chic. While others of her era wore mod or Space Age styles, Seberg followed the fashions that spoke to her best.
It wasn’t just with her clothing that she paved her own path. Seberg eschewed the heavy-lidded makeup trends of the sixties, opting instead for a natural look of crisply outlined eyes, rosy cheeks, and lightly colored lips.

In contrast to her delicate makeup, Seberg often wore chunky, cozy knits accented by simple details – a beefy cowl neck or a simple stripe at the turtleneck. She kept her accessories minimal opting for, if anything, sleek cat-eye glasses or a simple bit of headwear.

Her tomboy-ish, yet completely adorable, aesthetic, perfected by the hairdo that launched a thousand pixie cuts, not only set Seberg apart, it made her style unerringly classic.
Think you might set your eye on Serberg-inspired sweaters, stripes or layers when chill begins to fill the air?
film, style inspiration
I love this post Hannah! Jean has been one of my favorites ever since I first saw her in À bout de souffle, and her tragic life has endeared me to her not only has an incredible actress and style icon, but as a person <3
Thanks, Kailey! Glad you like the post. À bout de souffle was actually the film that made made her one of my faves too. 🙂
Yesss, great pick! I once spent a night (okay, not an ENTIRE night) valiantly googling, trying to find the designer of her striped dress in “Breathless”, to no avail.
I love Jean! She is one of my very favourite style icons – fabulous 🙂
She is so utterly fabulous.
I love this post and her simple ways.
