Do you remember your first valentine? I can recall the first one that really made an impression. During homeroom period in fifth grade, I eagerly collected classmates’ valentines in the shoe box I had festooned with glitter, paper doilies, and heart-shaped stickers. That year, Chip n’ Dale Rescue Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were pretty big, but I was a Muppet Babies gal all the way. So, imagine my utter delight when Chris B. presented me with a Kermit the Frog stuffed toy from McDonald’s. I had to hand it to him, the kid knew how to win my heart.
Memories are made and cherished every Valentine’s Day, but those that really stood out will always hold a special significance. A few years ago, fellow ModWriter Julie shared her own treasured scrapbook of vintage valentines. It’s easy to see why someone took such care to keep them close.
Me? Well, I’m pretty sure Kermie’s still around somewhere in a box up in the attic, keeping it real. I’ll always remember how special he made me feel.
What’s the story of your first or most memorable valentine?
My first Valentine memory is from the 1st grade. My teacher was having a Valentine’s day party. We were all making Valentine’s for our unsuspecting sweetheart. My sweetheart was Danny Witherspoon. As I was cutting out his heart, I thought to myself, “This is going to be the best Valentine’s Day ever! I attached pipe cleaners, tin foil to make it shiny, and crepe paper to add a little twist. Oh, how this was going to make him swoon! Needless to say, I never gave him my heart. I stomped on it and threw it away. Truth is…I had another love. A TRUE love in the waiting. Now that’s ador-ay!
