'Hair' and There: Illustrator Laura Rosenbaum Explores Hair Lust

“Nothing else quite compares to the way a girl sees herself through her hair,” states illustrator Laura Rosenbaum. Hair, she says, is a “magical fiber” that is somehow universal yet unique, and capable of inducing envy, desire, and fascination. “Whether it is curly, straight, wavy, kinky, fluffy, or thin, it slides, bounces, and dances, creating a life of its own.”

Rosenbaum teases out this introspective relationship between girls and their hair in her graduate series, “Hair Lust,” which opens tomorrow as part of Fashion Institute of Technology’s Illustration Masters of Arts group show. The tangled drawings of “Hair Lust” portray a mix of sass, humor, and longing, and speak to thoughts that have skittered through our own heads at one point or another.

While “Hair Lust” is Rosenbaum’s grad project, the talented artist has already had her work appear in Glamour Spain and Nylon Japan, meaning that this is a great chance to say you saw her work before she gets big.

The exhibition opens tomorrow, June 7, at 5:30 p.m., and will continue through July 2.
