Ever wish you’d inherited some natural talent or trait that belongs to none other than your mother? Maybe her eyes, her green thumb, or her knack for throwing together a magnificent meal in minutes? For me, it’s my mom’s artistic flair. Take a look at some of these truly fabulous fashion sketches she made when she was studying art in the 1960s.
When I first unearthed these sketches, I knew just where my everlasting love of vintage fashion and design had come from. I adore so many of the details, like the realistic shine of a handbag, the patterns on a dress, and the bouncy bobs and elegant updos. They’ve decorated many an apartment wall of mine throughout the years, and naturally, they’re some of my most-prized possessions.
Girdles, furs, and pocketbooks — these are just a few 60s fashion basics, and according to my mom, that’s what they all wore. While looking through the rest of her sketches, she snickered when she noted the pointy bras, too. So many of the retro styles, silhouettes, and looks us ModGirls love so much were captured here, back when they were current. So cool!

My mom not only has a green thumb, but a Lazarus green thumb — she has this uncanny ability to bring life back to dead plants that I have sadly mismanaged. The only thing I can get to thrive is spaghetti squash, which I don’t even like. My mom, however, has a perfectly landscaped lawn with a flagstone walkway and fence that she designed and installed herself. Her roses are famous, as well as her snapdragons that she cross-breeds to make so many fantastic colors. She also grows many kinds of peppermint (well, they were mine but when they “died” I gave her the planter back with the plants in and she resurrected them and put them in her own garden) with which I enjoy homemade tea whenever I visit. So, I wish I could have inherited her green thumb, but then again, I don’t like waking up early (she gets up at 5:00am to tend to her garden) and I hate bugs. and dirt. So, I suppose I will enjoy the fruits of her labor, and get her teach my three kids the skills of gardening, so maybe there is hope! Happy Mother’s Day!!! (rather Happy Mum’s Day! ; )
Wow, these are so cool! My mom has a talent of crocheting and sewing simple garments. She always made my brother and I cool Halloween costumes with just a few affordable yards of fabric and some scraps, and has crocheted me Barbie clothes! She even crocheted a cape for our beagle!
I’m so glad I got to see these in person! You’re very lucky to have these well-clad beauties gracing your walls, and a talented mom with such a flair for fashion!
Her confidence….she can walk into a room and instantly command attention from everyone in it. Me….not so much! Ha ha….I love the sketches, they are just lovely! So unique….and I love the way the necks were drawn. Amazing!
These sketches are amazing–just as good as any of the illustrations in advertisements you would have seen in the papers at that time. And I’d know since at the newspaper I work that I sometimes go through our old issues from the 50s and 60s.
Wow! These sketches are GORGEOUS. I especially love the detailing in the bags.
First off I love these sketches. Second I think I was blessed with inheriting all the qualities I love about my Mom and none of the qualities I dislike.. at least none I’m willing to admit to.. lol. I hope I can be as resilient as she was with child rearing. She raised me by herself often working multiple jobs to do it. I hope I can be even a fraction of what she was for me to my kids. <3 Happy Belated Mother's Day.
