Blogger of the Moment: A Beautiful Mess

Meet Elsie of A Beautiful Mess! She’s a DIY extraordinaire, a designer, a boutique owner, and an inspiring blogger. Not only does Elsie post adorable outfit pics, her blog also includes nifty downloadable e-courses on topics ranging from patchwork quilting to blogging. Her site is truly a lifestyle blog for the vintage lover, and you’ll get lost in her color-saturated photographs. Find out a little bit about the gal behind the blog by reading her interview, see how she styled her namesake dress, and peruse her ModCloth picks.

Who are your style icons? What else inspires your sense of style?
My style icons are my grandmother Corina, Orla Kiely, Sofia Coppola and, of course, Mary-Kate Olsen, for their ingenuity and perfectly developed styles. I’m also inspired by many hours in the studio. I find that the best designs often happen by accident when I’m working on other projects.

What blogs do you follow?
You can see all the blogs I follow on my ‘Daily Reads’ page, plus here are a few current obsessions… I love Coury’s blog, Fancy Treehouse, lushlee, and Keiko Lynn. I love making new blog friends.

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?

I run a boutique full time and spend lots of time treasure hunting with my fiance, Jeremy. I love painting, sewing, collecting vintage, and movie theater popcorn. I also can’t go to sleep at night without sketching a few ideas in my notebook.

You’re a bit of a DIY aficionado. Can you tell us a little bit about Project Restyle, and how people can get involved?
Yes! This is my just-for-fun new year’s goal! I’m ReStyling a used or damaged item into a fresh item every week in 2011. Lots of talented people are already involved. It’s so much fun. You can read all about it here!

You have your own boutiquecan you give girls interested in setting up shop some advice on realizing their dreams?
Wow. It’s definitely a learning process that doesn’t happen overnight. I highly recommend starting an Etsy shop to test the items you plan to market. Etsy is a great first step for any girls interested in selling handmade or vintage!

If you could live in the pages of a book or on the set of a movie, which book or movie would it be? Why?
I’d love to live on set of The Virgin Suicides or Down With Love. I love movies with an insane sense of style, like those two. I can definitely enjoy a movie just for the fashion, even if it’s not in English.

What would the perfect romantic date be for you?
I love taking little road trips with Mr. Larson. I’d love to take a trip through the South to thrift shop, eat pie, and take photos along the way.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
All of my best creative ideas happen while on an airplane or road trip. For some strange reason, leaving my hometown brings out my inner designer. I always travel with journals.

Do you have any secret dreams for the future?

Of course! My current project is my own little vintage inspired dress line, but I secretly want to turn Red Velvet into its own fashion label. Shhhhh! Oh, and I want to shop in Tokyo and London sooner than later.

Don’t forget to check out all of Elsie’s favorite ModCloth items!

About Turi

When Turi isn’t blogging, you can find her nose behind a book. But reading isn’t her only pastime. She loves running (cue jogging stroller), taste-testing pizza and burgers, and working on the next great American novel. Her latest homage to all things literary? Her son is named after writer Dashiell Hammett. How apropos.
