Blogger of the Moment: Gary Pepper Vintage

I hadn’t heard of Nicole of Gary Pepper Vintage until recently, but I don’t know how she escaped my radar since her style and photos are absolutely amazing. She mixes candy-colored pastels with black, and so many of her pretty pieces are vintage that I had to ask her for her tips for thrifting. Read her interview and find out her secret dreams for the future, and be the first to take a peek at her namesake dress and her favorite ModCloth pieces.

Who are your style icons? What inspires your style?
I absolutely adore everything about Alexa Chung, the Olsen twins and Olivia Palermo. They always exude such confidence and sophistication. My main source of inspiration comes from street style magazines and websites like The Sartorialist, Jak & Jil, Stockholm StreetStyle and They’re always full of beautifully dressed people scattered all over the world.

You live in Australia. Do you think living Down Under influences your look?
I definitely think living in Australia influences how I dress. We have a very laid-back, easygoing attitude, and beautiful weather year ’round, so I think it’s reflected in what we wear. Even our coldest days would be considered warm compared to London or New York, so there’s hardly any layering. Living by the beach doesn’t help either, so we like to keep it simple.

What blogs do you follow?

My daily blogs would be Jak & Jil, Fashiontoast, The Cherry Blossom Girl, Chicmuse and Zanita. Intrigue Me Now is a newfound favourite. Honestly, the list goes on–there’s so many amazing blogs out there but not enough time to find them!

You have your own online vintage shop. Any tricks for hunting down one-of-a-kind finds?
Always look in places you would never think to, and look through everything. The most amazing pieces I’ve found have always been hidden on the back of the racks in a tiny little shop that I would never have looked at twice from the outside. It’s like the old saying, “never judge a book by its cover.” And always be willing to have a good dig–it’s worth it!

What are your hobbies?
I still consider op shopping, or thrifting, one of my biggest hobbies. I also enjoy arts and crafts, like making photo diaries and scrapbooks, photography, baking, and, oddly enough, fishing. I’m very blessed to be able to call one of my hobbies my full-time work. It’s surreal, and after 12 months it still hasn’t sunk in yet. I’m not sure if it ever will!

If you could live in the pages of a book or on the set of a movie, which book or movie would it be? Why?

Harry Potter. I’ve always let my imagination run away with me, and ever since reading these books I’ve been constantly dreaming about wizards, witches, and magic. I know no matter how old I get I’ll always be a young at heart.

What would the perfect romantic date be for you?

A freshly packed picnic with a pot of English Breakfast tea in the middle of a meadow in the late afternoon sun. Pure bliss.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I’m actually quite terrible and awkward in front of a camera. My boyfriend is a photographer and takes all of the photos for my blog… they turn out the way they do because I’m extremely comfortable around him. If it’s anyone else, I’m hopeless and still quite shy!

Do you have any secret dreams for the future?
Oh, plenty! I want to live in Paris and Japan; I want to own my own studio; I want to travel the world with my work and meet interesting new people along the way. I hope to eventually open my vintage retail store somewhere in Sydney or Melbourne and expand overseas. As long as I’m working with vintage, I’ll be happy.

And don’t forget to check out all of Nicole’s favorite ModCloth pieces!

About Turi

When Turi isn’t blogging, you can find her nose behind a book. But reading isn’t her only pastime. She loves running (cue jogging stroller), taste-testing pizza and burgers, and working on the next great American novel. Her latest homage to all things literary? Her son is named after writer Dashiell Hammett. How apropos.

    What a great article!
I love how honest she is about being shy in front of the camera, and how even after twelve months, the reality of running her own shop full time hasn’t sunk in.
    Thanks for the great feature!
