Happy Pride Month! We’re kicking things off with cute-as-can-be couple Allie and Sam! Based out of Nova Scotia, these wives and fur moms sat down with us to discuss their Pride Month celebrations, the LGBTQ+ community, and what pride means to them. If you’re looking for pride outfits inspiration, keep scrolling for their looks from our Peace, Love, and Rainbows shop! All Pride Month long, when you buy from the PLR shop, 10% of the purchase price from select styles will be donated to The Trevor Project – an organization that provides life-saving, life-affirming suicide prevention services for LGBTQ+ youth.
We love following your adventures on Instagram! What inspired the two of you to begin sharing your love story?
When I was coming out, I really struggled finding any representation in the media or on social media. I felt like I couldn’t connect to many people out there. When Sam and I met, she felt the same, and we decided that by sharing how we felt, and our experiences, maybe we could help others feel a little less alone.
Pride Month is such an important time of year for so many. How do you two normally celebrate Pride Month? How are you planning on celebrating this year in light of COVID-19?
Yes, we love Pride Month! We usually travel a lot, so we end up going to Prides wherever we are. We’ve gone to LA Pride, San Diego Pride, Toronto Pride, and Whistler Pride – which were all so, so fun! This year will be a bit different, but we plan to do some virtual Pride celebrations on IG and YouTube, and we will also be doing an IG Live series, interviewing some people we look up to in the LGBTQ+ community!
Part of the fun of attending pride events is putting together pride outfits! Do either of you have a favorite pride outfit you’ve worn over the years? What are you both planning on wearing this year?
This is actually one of my favourite parts about Pride! I spend so long putting together our outfits every year! (Usually multiple, and it’s a bonus being married to another girl – one look goes twice as far!) I think my favourite look might be some sparkly rainbow sequin shorts we got a few years ago – they seem to make it into the lineup every year. This year, we’ll be wearing rainbows all month long at home! We are so excited to wear the new ModCloth pieces, as well as the tees we designed this year, too!
What can people do this Pride Month to raise awareness about important issues that impact the LGBTQ+ community?
I think the biggest thing is talking about it. It can be easy to forget that so many people still struggle with feeling safe and accepted. So many parts of the world punish those who are not straight. It’s terrible. I think during Pride, and all year long, we need to work together to raise our voices and speak up for those who can’t. We need to fight so that everyone can be safe being who they are.
What does Pride mean to you both?
It means so much! It’s a chance to reflect on how far we’ve both come as individuals, and how much we’ve grown since coming out. It’s a chance to thank those who came before us and fought to make same-sex marriage legal in our country. It’s a chance to think about how far we have to go, to fight for those who are unsafe where they live. Mostly, it’s a reminder to speak up, share our stories, and be a listening ear to those who are struggling with figuring out who they are!
