Protein-packed, vitamin-enriched smoothies are a great way to jump start your morning or give you a midday boost, and they taste so good it almost seems sinful! Today we’re throwing you a creamy citrus smoothie bowl that’s loaded up with antioxidant-rich orange juice—plus cranberries, protein-dense cashews, sweet and fibrous dates, superfood hemp, and skin-boosting collagen. It legit tastes like a sweet and creamy orange creamsicle, but has zero added sugar and is a filling and delicious lunch or breakfast replacement!
What You Need
- 2.5 cups of coconut ice (simply freeze coconut water)
- 5 pitted, soft-dried dates
- 1/4 cup dried cranberries
- 1/4 cup raw, unsalted cashews
- 1/4 cup hemp seed (we’re using Manitoba Harvest’s Organic Hemp Hearts)
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
- 1/8 cup collagen (we’re using half a packet of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides)
Protip: to save some money, shop the bulk food aisle at your local grocery store! Especially if you don’t think you’ll need an entire huge bag of dates, cashews, or cranberries!
Zest & Juice Your Orange
We recommend using fresh oranges since they’re in season (and bonus if you’re lucky enough to have one in your backyard like we do!), but prepackaged orange juice will also work. Just try to find some without any added sugars. Zest your orange, then juice away until you’ve got one cup’s worth.
Combine, Blend, & Pour
Combine all your ingredients together in a blender, and then blend away! For a thicker consistency, add more ice. For a thinner one that’s drinkable, add less ice. Pour your contents into a bowl (or cup if you’re on the run). By the way, the collagen is optional, but it’s a great way to give your overall body a healthy boost! Collagen strengthens and improves hair and nails, makes your skin glow, and is great for your joints, ligaments, and tendons.
Add the Toppings
Half the fun of making a smoothie bowl is eating it. The other half? Decorating it and posting a gorgeous picture on social media!
To keep with the “orange” theme, we used a melon baller on fresh mango and added a dusting of orange zest. We also added sliced kiwi for a pop of green, more dried cranberries, and coconut-flavored hemp hearts. Get creative with your toppings, utilizing fruits and nuts that you love. Try: banana (or banana chips), pineapple, melon, orange slices, pistachios, cashews, berries, dragon fruit, and dried coconut flakes.
