Decoding Wedding Dress Codes

What exactly is “barnyard chic”? And what does “black tie” require? What does “cocktail attire” even mean, because can’t you have cocktails in just about anything?!

You’ve got questions about wedding dress codes, and we’ve got answers — in the form of super-stylish outfit suggestions for the most common wedding dress code (and a few that are not-so-common)…

Black Tie

Black tie = fancy shmancy! This is the time to pull out all the stops, and put on the glitz. A stunning satin tea-length dress is perfect for just such an occasion, and with the addition of some sparkle in the form of a bejeweled belt, glittery gold heels, and sparkling accessories, you’ll have a look that’s as lovely as it is luxe.

Barnyard Chic

Rustic weddings are all the rage! But, what should you don when your pals are getting hitched in a beautiful barn? One super-important consideration for this setting is your shoe choice. We recommend going with a walkable wedge heel that will not get caught in grass, hay, or between wooden planks! To those hot steppers, add a darling dress in a lightweight fabric that’ll breathe in no-AC circumstances, then add a wonderful woven bag, and a statement necklace that’ll give the whole ensemble some polished pizzazz.

Cocktail Attire

When the invite calls for cocktail attire, think: glam night out. A strapless dress in a beautiful brocade fabric will fit the bill with style to spare! All you need to finish the look with flair are a few fab accessories — sleek, simple heels, a sparkly necklace and earrings, and a posh purse. Voilá! Gorgeous getup: complete.

Circus Elegance

So, you’re a guest at a wedding that features a striped bigtop-style tent, cotton candy, and games of skill? Kick your outfit’s fun factor up, up, and away! Ground your look in colorful heels in a punchy pink hue, then put on a sassy sundress, a kaleidoscopic necklace, and — the cherry on top — a fantastically fun-loving bag that’ll have all the other guests saying, “Where did she get that?!”

Beach Formal

There’s usually only one thing you need to wear to the beach: a swimsuit. But if you’re attending a beautiful beach ceremony, you’d better not show up in your bikini (unless it’s that type of wedding — we’re sure there are swimsuit ceremonies happening somewhere out there!). So, if you’ve RSVP-ed ‘yes’ to something beach-chic, here’s the game plan: start with a pretty dress with a casual-cool crochet overlay. Then, simply step into a pair of fancy sandals, put on a dazzling necklace, pick up a cute clutch, and don’t forget your sunnies! You’re all set for your seaside soiree.

I have a wedding in Hong Kong to go to Summer 2017!
What do I wear that is pretty but keeps me cool in the sweltering climate and humidity?
