It’s been almost a year since I stumbled upon Elizabeth of Delightfully Tacky. I was browsing Chictopia or Weardrobe and said to myself, “Hey, I recognize the trees in the background of that outfit photo! Those are Alaskan trees!” Having been born in Alaska and spent my earliest years there, I was super excited to find an Alaskan style blogger! It was love at first sight. Elizabeth looks like a woodland fairy, with her amazing hair and dainty stature. But her nymph-like appearance is deceiving–she blends edgy and romantic pieces in her outfits, plus, she’s getting ready to drive across the country solo in her beloved Winnebago Brave.
Read on to hear more about the adventures she dreams of, and get a peek at Elizabeth wearing her namesake dress in her natural surroundings. Oh, and of course, you’ll want to drool over Elizabeth’s favorite ModCloth picks.
There are a lot of bad stereotypes about Alaskans’ style – fleece, puffy coats, snow boots. What ways has Alaska influenced your style in a positive way?
I think it allowed my style to develop in a much “purer” way, if that makes sense. I wasn’t bombarded with trends and so just always wore whatever felt most comfortable. For the first 20 years of my life that meant having zero style, but I think it gave me a good foundation to be confident in knowing what I liked and didn’t like. Plus, I will always be a tomboy. I love being outdoors and working on stuff with my dad, so in a way that influences my style as well.
Which celebrity would play you in a movie of your life and why? Who would play your love interest?
Zooey Deschanel. Hands down. I feel like we are very similar in a lot of ways (if I can say that, I mean, I’ve never met her in real life, though a lot of people say I talk like her). Love interest… hm. I would say Joshua Jackson. He is to-die-for in Fringe.
I know you’re saving up to buy a Winnebago Brave to voyage across the country. Where are you most excited to visit?
I adore being on the open road. I’m just excited to go everywhere, though I think my favorite destinations will be visiting various people I know around the country. Meeting other bloggers too. Living in Alaska makes it hard to attend blogger meet-ups and such, so I’m excited to meet people around the country.
Do you have any secret dreams for the future?
Secret dreams, eh? I secretly want to be a forensic anthropologist just like Temperance Brennan in Bones. Yeah, I live my life vicariously through television shows. Maybe in a year or so I’ll go back to school for forensic anthropology…
What style blogs do you follow?
My favorite blogs are the ones by girls who I can really relate to. Rebecca’s blog, The Clothes Horse, was the one that inspired me to start blogging and she’s been so wonderful. Hers is definitely a daily read. I also adore Tieka from Selective Potential, Erin from Calivintage, Kristin from Leproust Vintage, Mel from Idee Geniale… there are just so many that are infinitely inspiring!
If you could plan the perfect date with a crush, what would the two of you do?
Duh! Drive around in a Winnebago! No, I think I would just love to run around town all day taking photos with our cameras, thrifting, and finding cool places – hopefully concluding in a relaxing evening in some dive-bar, talking until the wee-hours of the night.
When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
Writing, photography and making art. Someday I’d love to write a book that just was full of sketches and photographs, poetry and thoughts. I think I’m going to do this as a documentation of my Winnebago journey.
What are your favorite bands?
Absolute all time favorite: Radiohead. I also love Van Halen, She & Him, Jim Croce, David Bowie, Against Me!, Billy Joel, Heart, Band of Horses, Bon Iver, etc.
And last but not least– if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and what would you eat?
I’d like to have Thanksgiving dinner with the Founding Fathers. We’d probably drink some pretty great beer as well. I think it would be so incredible to be around such brilliant minds, gleaning knowledge from them as we all chatted about the founding of the nation and the Revolution.
Plus, don’t forget to check out the Delightfully Tacky Dress!
