What’s on Our Head of Writing’s Desk?

The ModCloth offices are just as filled with donuts, dogs, and dresses as you imagine them to be. But there’s also lots of work to be done!

As the Head of Writing at ModCloth, a workspace that fosters creativity is an absolute must — as is a trinket dish with candy in it. Want to see what all my essential desk elements are? Then, in the words of Janet, let me take you on a desk-apade, baby. (Okay, not her exact words, but close.)

Let’s start with the wall decor. I absolutely require color. Far more of a maximalist than a minimalist, I adore looking up to see the bright blossoms on the Infused with Femininity Print. Equally important (and motivating)? The Present Tense Situation Print — and a vintage carnival glass print of Bruce Springsteen that my co-worker (and friend!) Marne gave me.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes wearing rings while typing all day really irks me. So, I keep a li’l trinket dish on my desk to corral any jewelry I decide to remove during the day, along with a few sweet treats for those much-needed afternoon pick-me-up situations. I also adore the Sight for Saur Eyes Lamp in Stegosaurus — it’s totally quirky, stegosaurus is my fave dino, and the warm glow helps negate a bit of that overhead fluorescence!

Another desktop necessity? A pretty planner. This one goes all the way into January of 2018, so I can keep myself in check through then. Sure, I work for an internet company, but I am a writer, and writing things down on paper with a good ol’ pen helps me remember them so much better than typing ’em out.

Two major Monday through Friday must-haves? Hot coffee and cold water (probably pamplemousse, which we can all agree is the best La Croix). For this, I employ a mug that says what everyone’s thinking come Friday afternoon, and a functional-yet-fashionable dual-insulted travel bottle that keeps drinks icy well beyond 9 to 5.

My stress relief essential oil also holds a permanent spot on the corner of my desk. It really helps, I swear! Beside it, you’ll find a vase with a few blossoms, because like Monet, I must have flowers, always and always. And on that same floral note, a pair of posy-printed headphones are crucial because the right playlist can really elevate your creative flow!

Fresh flowers, floral print dresses, and a good gin and tonic are just a few of her favorite things.
