3 Steps to the Cutest DIY Doormat On the Block

A lackluster porch step calls for a makeover, but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank. The solution, of course, is to put on your DIY hat and get a little creative.

This super simple DIY doormat can be recreated in half the time it takes you to listen to your favorite album. Not to mention, it’s easy enough to recreate that even those who insist they lack an artistic gene will declare success! Let’s get started!

What You Need:

  • Basic doormat (Mine is this $5 version from IKEA)
  • Spray paint in your choice color
  • Marker
  • Paper bag
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Measuring tape

Step 1: Create a Heart Stencil
Begin by cutting your brown paper bag so that it lies flat. Then draw on a half heart, like you see pictured. Doesn’t this bring you back to good old grade school days? Cut along your line and discard the center.

Step 2: Take Measurements
To make sure your heart stencil falls smack dab in the center of your doormat, you’ll want to take a few simple measurements. Measure the length and width of your mat, and then divide those numbers in half. The center of your heart should fall right in the intersection of those two numbers.

Step 3: Tape Down and Spray Away
Next you’re going to tape down your paper bag. I taped on the outside, and then created pieces of rolled tape to place on the underside of the bag. This helps achieve a more crisp line. Before you start spray painting, it’s also a good idea to cover any exposed edges of the doormat with scrap paper (I already removed them for this picture). Finally, follow the instructions on your spray paint and go to town.

Wait for the spray paint to dry, remove the paper and place in front of your door. Pretty sweet, huh?

I’ve been wanting to do a DIY doormat for a while now! I live in an apartment so the hallway looks so boring! This might give the extra push I need to make my own! Super cute and simple! Love!
