Shuffling around the web a few weeks ago, I bumped into the wild action figure lamps of Ryan McElhinney, and a light went off in my head. Ding! Here was the perfect project for putting childhood collections of toys and trinkets to use!
Armed with this gust of inspiration, I developed a super plan:
1. Find Superman, Spider-Man, and a whole host of their fellow action figures on Craigslist. (I did consider using mini tea sets and pony figurines for my lamp, but I really loved the superhero aesthetic.)
2. Acquire hot glue gun, lamp, and spray paint.
3. Lights, camera, action figures! Glue action figures to the lamp, let them dry, and then spray paint ’em.
Mission complete. How many of the fun figures from the four faces of the lamp can you identify? And, which old collection might you put to use in this enlightening way?
Ha!! Now I know what to do with all my husbands old toys!
OOH! Love this!
I have a major love of vintage buttons, so I might buy some on http://www.etsy.com and use them. Or, I could use cracked vintage china from a thrift store, break them up, and have a kitschy vintage lamp!
So many possibilites, which one to choose? 🙂
I’ve seen this on your desk and wondered if you made it! But the gold gives it an old vintage feel until you take a closer look. Awesome 🙂
That’s so great! AH wow I actually am in awe of this DIY!
I can identify at least 8 of the figures (no, not really). I might have to take some hot pink spray paint to my old Barbie collection to personalize a lamp of my very own. Actually, I take that back Barbie is too precious. I’ll just use Skipper instead.
By the way you did such a good job with your lamp.
I have been collecting my boys cast off/ partially broken action figures (for a couple years now) to recycle into a lamp after being inspired by Ryan McElhinney myself! I love how they are all in action on your finished piece!! Great job!! I have three boys, so the action figures were perfect, I love the girls pony and barbie ideas too!
