Is your space craving some change? Only have an afternoon to spend sprucing? Welcome to the last installment of ‘Inside Story,’ our four-part interior design series featuring super simple, low-commitment projects you can conquer in just a few hours.

Our Associate Product Manager Fontaine will teach you how to create your own decorative wall decals using minimal supplies and simple skills. Don’t stress about sticking them either–Fontaine has some tips for bubble-free adhesion, too!

Masking tape
Vinyl contact paper
Credit card or ruler
Downloadable patterns (linked below)

1. Print our flower vase or budding vine decal patterns onto standard-size printer paper. Use scissors to cut out printed patterns, place them atop contact paper, and trace with pencil.

2. Using scissors, cut out each piece of pattern.

3. After you’ve decided where you’d like your decals, use masking tape donuts to place pieces on wall for temporary positioning.

4. When all pieces are in place, peel away small edge of first piece, stick just that part to the wall to achieve desired position, then peel the rest of the backing away. Use ruler or credit card to smoothly roll the rest of the sticky side onto the wall in small parts to minimalize the appearance of bubbles.

Fontaine’s Tips:

  • Patterns with small pieces are super easy to rearrange when you need a change.
  • Big scissors work great for large pieces of decal while small sewing scissors are better for the fine details like the flower shapes above.
  • If you’re feeling adventurous, try making your own pattern using Photoshop, but be sure your pieces fit onto 8.5 x 11-in. paper. If they’re on the larger side, simply divide the pattern into parts before printing, so you can still position them together easily.

That flower vase might be perfect for my office this time of year… I usually love fresh flowers, but they’re harder to come by in Michigan right now!

Where did you get the contact paper? I found some but it wasn’t adhesive.
