When OREO challenged us to #decktheballs, we gleefully accepted. Not to toot our own horn, but we’ve got a pretty crafty group at ModCloth, so I thought whipping up a batch of delicious — and adorable — OREO cookie balls would be a piece (of perfectly decorated) cake! In fact, not gonna lie, I actually thought we might even have to stage a few #fail-style shots.
Well, turns out, we didn’t have to stage any at all. Very, very few of us have a shot at winning Sweet Genius. But, what we do have are some handy tips on what to do, and more importantly, what not to do, when decorating OREO cake balls.
Tip 1: If you have long hair, make sure you pull it back into a ponytail or bun.
Tip 2: Decorating gel is not the edible equivalent of glue. (We found the melted chocolate or peanut butter chips worked best!)
Tip 3: Speaking of the melted chocolate and PB chips, as you dip and decorate, make sure to stir every so often, or the chocolate and peanut butter will become solid, hardened masses.
Tip 4: Before beginning to decorate, have a clear idea or goal in mind. We only had vague guidelines, and eventually adopted the motto “let the OREO cookie ball guide you”.
Tip 5: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!
In the end, the biggest lesson we learned was this: No matter whether the OREO cookie ball looked like a perfect pug puppy or an unidentifiable glob, it still tasted great.
