From Chintzy to Chic: A DIY Hama Bead Necklace that Doesn’t Kid Around

I’d always considered hama beads (a.k.a perler beads) to be the most royally chintzy crafting good known to woman, man, dog, cat, alien, monster – pretty much anyone. Nostalgic, yes, but stylish? Never!

All that changed, though, when I chanced upon this editorial featuring the work of Shanghai-based designer Sabine Ducasse, whose immaculate hama bead creations ignited my DIY spirit and set me on a quest to create a wear-worthy necklace from these beads.

Check out our step-by-step hama bead necklace tutorial, and don’t miss out on the bit of bonus fun we included: a downloadable template of the necklace pictured above!

How did you do this without a pegboard? Were you just ridiculously careful?

Yes! Super careful. Might have to invest in a pegboard for next time though; it was pretty time consuming to use tweezers and fingers :).
