This video of the DuckTales theme song featuring real ducks has recently been evoking many an “Awww!” and loads of nostalgia. While the featured fowl seem less than enthused about their costume changes, the ambitious video has brought up memories of more animal-based cartoons from the DuckTales era.

Ask an ’80s kid what cartoons with fauna she remembers, and you’ll likely hear of the following choices: My Little Pony ‘n’ Friends, Care Bears, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. These titles, which have had many remakes in the past three decades, filled our Saturday mornings and after-school hours.

But what of the shows that haven’t recurred as often, if at all? See if the cartoons below spark fond memories of time spent in front of the tube.

Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers

Dapper and daring, the duo of Chip and Dale were always taking viewers somewhere exciting.

Although Cheetara was always my favorite alien-human-cat mix, it was a homemade Wilykit costume that I sported to Manhattan’s Village Halloween Parade in my early 20s. Thundercats, Ho!

Adventures of the Gummi Bears

These magic bears had few human friends and enchanted juice that gave them fun powers.

The Wuzzles

Hybrid imaginary creatures with familiar aspects of the animal kingdom, these rotund and colorful characters were also made into popular toys.

Looking back, the ’80s were an odd and creative time in cartoon history. Aside from recognizable animals, we had Fraggles, Smurfs, Snorks, and Popples, too.

What’s your favorite childhood cartoon?

I love Duck Tales. We got to play the theme song in band class during my junior high school days. That was so awesome on the trumpet.
