With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, we’ve been seeking quick ways to make the holiday a special one. Whether you’re hanging with friends, dining with the one you adore, or just want a reason to let your skills shine extra this week, Melissa Johnson of Best Friends For Frosting is here to inspire your own enchanting entourage of treats.
“While styling this spread with some of my friends (a crew of crazy-talented ladies), I clung to sparkles, metallics, glitter, and pastels to communicate a vintage feel,” says Melissa. “Here, you’ll find a few easy tips for making your own dessert spread, plus I’ve included a 3-step tutorial on how to make the gold-dipped feather garland pictured below.”
Gold-Dipped Feather Garland

What you’ll need:
12 white feathers
twine or string
1. Paint â…“ of each feather gold and immediately sprinkle gold glitter on top.
2. Allow feathers to dry for at least 24 hours.
3. Once dry, tie feathers onto twine or string, spacing them about 3 inches apart, and secure with clear tape if necessary.
“My cake designer friend Tessa Lindow-Huff made this tiered treasure with a classic-romantic style in mind. After covering it in lightly tinted gold fondant, the entire cake was sprayed with a pearl dust to give it an antique feel. She also added white sugar roses trimmed in gold and blushing sweet pea bunches to the first tier to tie the whole look together. Lovely, isn’t it?”
“Tessa made these stunning mini trifles, too. You can make them easily at home by cutting any store-bought cake with a round cutter, so you have circles that fit nicely into the bottom of your clear serving dishes. Then, add layers of strawberry mousse and whipped cream, and top them off with dollops of homemade meringue. They’re simpler than they look!”
