Whoop-a-dee-doo-da for Whoopie Pies!

I recently made and ate my first whoopie pie. The result? Nothing short of delicious. If you love whoopie pies or want to try out this funny-sounding treat, snatch up our newest cookbook, Whoopie Pies, before it sells out!

This fun cookbook is authored by whoopie pie connoisseurs Sarah Billingsley and Amy Treadwell, who recount the history and tasty tidbits about the whoopie pie.  The book also offers traditional recipes such as the classic chocolate and marshmallow filling sandwich, as well as quirkier pies like the “Rock the Casbah” (rosewater buttercream filling sandwiched between pistachio-cardamom cakes) and the “Cinnamonylicious” (red velvet rolled in cinnamon-flavored candies)!

After reading all about these history-filled pies, I decided to make my own. The easy-to-follow recipes call for pretty basic ingredients and techniques, so I called a buddy over on the weekend to make a couple batches. We baked the cakes on a Saturday, packed them in the freezer as per the instructions, and then whipped together the fillings and sandwiches on Sunday.

The authors organized cake and filling recipes separately in the book to encourage readers to create their own combinations, which I had a lot of fun doing! My personal favorites are the Classic Chocolate Whoopie with Salty Peanut Butter filling, though the Oatmeal Whoopie with Classic Buttercream is a close second. My friend and I also rolled in colorful sugar and sprinkles to add a bit of whimsy to the whoopies.

One last interesting point about the book is the author’s research into the origin of the whoopie pie. Most of my friends disagree over what makes a “real” whoopie pie, and while this book doles out information, it makes no conclusions on a universal definition. But, isn’t that the fun of it?

    OMG I thought these were just a Nova Scotia thing! A lot of ppl I mention them to have never heard of them. My mom has always made these, since before I was born, just the classic chocolate ones with white icing (though she did make pumpkin ones for Halloween/Thanksgiving one time). THey are the best dessert ever! Might have to buy this book as a christmas present for her lol

    I love love love these. My mom always made the chocolate/marshmallow ones and we called them black moons. I’m actually making a butt load of them for treats at my wedding in 9 days! 🙂
