With the 2020 presidential election fast approaching, we all must do our part when it comes to exercising the right to vote. Because after all, friends don’t let friends not vote! That’s why we’re partnering with I am a voter, a nonpartisan movement that believes democracy works best when we all participate. 50% of proceeds from our exclusive tee will be donated to I am a voter to help promote voting and civic engagement. To learn more about this amazing organization, we sat down with Natalie, the co-founder of I am a voter. Read on to find out how you can lend your support!
We love the work that I am a voter does! Can you explain what services this wonderful movement provides?
We aim to create a cultural shift around voting and make voter identity mainstream! We know that our democracy works best when we all participate. Our tools help ensure that we have the ability to vote! Our website and text platform help you register to vote, direct you to your polling place, help you request a vote by mail ballot and send you reminders for all your elections. We want to share important voting information such as deadlines and vote early dates in a clear and concise way. Most importantly, we are honored to have terrific partners (like you, ModCloth!) who are willing to use their platform as a way to amplify this important message to your community.
What is a little-known fact about voting or voting registration that you wish more people knew?
Every decision that affects our daily lives you can trace back to an elected position! Want the pothole on your road fixed? Or better public transportation services? As a voter, you can influence these outcomes by electing leaders that align with your values and vision for your community. Voting is the most powerful tool we have to make change, so let’s use it!
What can the general public do to lend support to organizations such as I am a voter?
Voter turnout was only 61% in 2016 which means you probably know someone who didn’t vote so we have an incredible opportunity this year to turn out new voters. Everyone is an influencer – meaning everyone has a platform and a network that they can activate. Do a post on social media, remind your friends about deadlines and check in with family to make sure they have their voting plan locked in. If they need more information, you can always direct them to our website or text platform.
The 2020 presidential election is now less than 100 days days away. What is a typical day at I am a voter leading up to the election? What is the organization most focused on in preparation for November 3rd?
We want to have the highest voter turnout this year – so it’s a busy time. From the minute I wake up to the second before I fall asleep, I am talking about voting! Due to the pandemic, many Americans may not be visiting their local polling place this year on November 3. We are focused on educating the public on their safe and secure voting options – whether it’s voting early or by mail.
Voting during a pandemic has posed many challenges. What advice do you have for those who do not wish to vote in person?
The good news is that you have options! At least 83% American voters can cast their ballots by mail this year. If you’re not sure what your options are, text VOTER to 26797 and we’ll make sure you get the information you need to cast your vote in November!
