5 Questions for the Iconic Anna Sui

When Anna Sui’s highly-anticipated tome arrived at the office, we were smitten on sight. The retrospective’s foil-stamped hardcovers, vibrant photography, and sharply written commentary on Sui’s lengthy career left us stunned and speechless. When we learned that we would have the chance to pose a few questions to Sui, we became even more paralyzed with awe. How could we, mere mortals, ask Anna Sui, the woman who single-handedly popularized the babydoll dress silhouette in between designing psychedelic prints and fraternizing with iconic ’90s supermodels, a question worthy of her stylish grandeur?

We asked Anna about her current musical obsessions, time travel, and her best life advice. Here’s what she had to say:

1. Music has always been a big part of your life, and your designs. What songs do you have playing on repeat right now?
“The Ghost Who Walks” by Karen Elson
“The Suburbs” by Arcade Fire
“Remember When” by The Black Keys
“Psychotic Girl” by The Black Keys
“Seven Like That” by Quickspace

2. If you could travel back in time and experience any decade, what decade would that be?
The 1960s.

3. If you weren’t a fashion designer, what do you think you would be?
If I wasn’t a fashion designer, I always say that I’d be a rock star. Realistically, I could see myself working as a curator in a museum, or doing interior decoration.

4. You’re the queen of print mixing, so we must know: What’s the secret to styling multiple prints in one outfit?
As long as you stick to one color palette, you can mix it up and be a little playful.

5. Any life advice?
My father always told me that if I want to have my own company, I should be in the office every day before the rest of my staff…and stay later than anyone else. That philosophy of hard work and dedication has always inspired me.
