Touring with your band is hard. The hunger for music sometimes overcomes practical day-to-day necessities, like filling your belly with wholesome meals. Brooklyn writer Kara Zuaro reached out to noted musicians in favorite indie bands to uncover their on-the-road recipes in our Book of the Month, I Like Food, Food Tastes Good.
While the book bubbles over with easy-to-follow recipes, it’s more than just a cookbook. Stories about the recipes and direct quotes from the musicians themselves add flavor. You’ll get a buffet of different types of dishes. Just like music brings people together, this book brings meat eaters and non-meat eaters alike. You’ve got Roots of Orchis’ Sweet Potato Biscuits and Vegan Vegetable Gravy, as well as Battles’ Roasted Bone Marrow. For adventurous diners, there’s an entire chapter on funny sandwich combinations from the likes of Belle and Sebastian, M. Ward, and more. There’s even something called the “Exploding Sandwich.”

I would want to make tiramisu with Saint Motel.

The band is Wings and the meal is Veggie Stir-fry with Spring Rolls. yum.
I’d have Alabama Shakes over! My choice for dinner would be my favorite stuffed shells with spinach, artichoke, ricotta and tons of spices.
I would want to eat a cake shaped like a house with the Talking Heads so we could talk about More Songs About Buildings and Food.
I would make crepes with Dragonette.
Some kind of fancy soup…..maybe pumpkin, with Kate Nash. I love her.
While it’s true my backyard bears a remarkable resemblance to the overgrown maze from ‘The Labyrinth,’ it does boast a mighty fine plastic outdoor dining set (complete with a missing leg). There are, coincidentally, five chairs to this set, begging to be graced by the tosshies of Otis Williams, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, and Elbridge ‘Al’ Bryant from The Temptations.
To feed those hungry little tummies – before the ‘de-whoop-di-doing’ gets out if hand – I’d stuff them with a South African dish called Roti. My mum used to make this when we were kids, and it was always the highlight for the week since it was the only meal we were allowed to make a mess of. There’s all kinds of fun stuff happening: tearing off bits of pita bread and dunking it into the chicken-potato-veggie-thing that’s lurking in your bowl; finding the sauce somehow on your elbow, with no clue as to how it got there; and the international joy of eating with your hands, and getting away with it.
After eating this stuff, they ‘ain’t too proud to beg’ for seconds.
Since I’m from the South, I would make pinto beans with cornbread and mashed potatoes. And who would I cook for?? Within Temptation. A symphonic metal band from the Netherlands. Why? 1) I love them and 2) I think it would be humorous to sit down and chow down on typical southern food with a group of people from the Netherlands.
I would want to cook lavender ice cream for Stars.
if i had the chance to cook a meal for my favourite band, it would be a big fat juicy burger, grilled up with fried onions, ballpark mustard, crispy bacon, and two layers of jalapeno cheddar cheese for the Beastie Boys (RIP Adam Yauch) while listening to Heart Attack Man in the background.
I’d love to make a huge breakfast spread with Clare and the Reasons. They seem like good value folks and they did sing about waffles that one time.
I would make fruit cocktail jello salad with whipped cream topping for Metronomy. It would fit perfectly with their “The English Riviera” album. Does that count as cooking?
I’d love to have Jack White over and make him some good ol’ cornbread and gumbo.
I would love to Make a recipe using Skyr for Of Monsters and Men. They are icelandic and Skyr is a very healthy and common part of the icelandic diet. ive only tried it once, but it was very tasty and contains lots of protein and calcium so they can have the energy to keep touring
I’d invite Damien Rice & serve him some cornmeal-crusted fried soft shell crabs, with maple apple bacon donuts for dessert 😉 Mostly because those are things /I/ want to eat.
I’d have greasy spoon bacon and eggs, and whiskey with Tom Waits. Except we’d have at it 2 in the morning.
I would definitely cook a meal for Edward Sharp & the Magnetic Zones. My tasty dish would be a homestyle Southern dish, in honor of my favorite song of theirs, “Home.” The second state mentioned in the song is Arkansas, the south, where I’m from, so it would only make sense to cook such a dish for my favorite brand. The meal would start off with biscuits. Then I would bring out the golden fried chicken, buttery mashed potatoes, bacon-topped green beans, cream corn, and sweet cole slaw. (Of course sweet tea would be the beverage choice of the night) To finish the night off, I’d bring out some ooey-gooey, homemade, all American apple pie and vanilla ice cream. Yummy yummy!! That’s my kind of “Home”-cookin!!
I would make tacos for WHY?
I would make a huge dessert table full of macarons and galettes for The Shins.
I’m not the greatest cook, but I would enlist my mom’s help and bake her chocolate chip cookies for Dragonette. My mom’s cookies are the best and I think Martina, Dan, and Joel would approve!
If I ever was given the opportunity, I would have Wye Oak over and cook them up “tamaya” and “kushery,” two Egyptian dishes I learned how to make during my year-long stay in Cairo. Then I could tell them how their music was my life-line back home during my travels!
I would make the one thing I’m really good at: Chipotle Chicken Salad Wraps and the band would be Panic At The Disco. I’ve been listening to them for years 🙂
I would invite Florence + The Machine over and we would have a barbecue under the evening sun with Eton Mess for pudding! Music blaring from the conservatory is a definite!

I would made cherry pies for The Show Ponies. They are the BEST folk/bluegrass Americana band in LA right now, and all I want to do is make them cherry pies.
I am dreaming of brunch with Morrissey…Oatmeal Pancakes…plenty of fresh seasonal fruit…Quiche with Asparagus and smoked Gouda…Blueberry French Toast Bake…Mimosa’s and Bloody Mary’s…Lovely 🙂
I’d make breakfast for dinner! Pumpkin pancakes from scratch, fruit smoothies with chai seeds, sausage and eggs. For icona pop

I’d make a 3-Layer Jello Salad in a clear glass Pyrex dish and serve it on lettuce leaves on salad plates to The New Standards.
I’d cook a nice square meal for 2D of my favorite band, Gorillaz. He looks like he could use one! I’d make him a fish dinner with lots of fresh veggies and some vitamin-packed sorbet for dessert.
I would make spaghetti tacos, because they are absolutely delicious, with a side of pork and beans, because of the song, for Weezer!
Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, cheesy grits, and a chocolate cake for The Decemberists =)

I would love to have a grilled cheese bar and mixed drinks with the Local Natives.
I would probably cook with Ed Sheeran because just like me, he loves to eat. I read somewhere that the only thing he knows how to cook is fajitas, so fajitas it is!
I would make hummus for Pete Doherty, I guess.
Since my favorite band is Paramore and Hayley Williams calls Tennessee her home, I would bring them down to Mississippi and cook them a warm, Southern meal – I’d go granny-style in my little apartment. This means the main dish, most definitely fried bass or catfish, would be skirted with vegetables, from greens to beans, and buttered mashed potatoes dressed with brown gravy. If there’s still room, we’d have the choice of Elvis Presley pineapple cake or cornbread with milk as we chill the night away with conversation and acoustic sounds.
I am a baker at heart! The music that I find myself listening to most often when I bake is by Kate Nash. I would bake her my favorite chocolate cake recipe and decorate it super cute and girly to match her style. 🙂
I would prepare a meal for Of Montreal. The appetizer would be O.M.M.2. jalapeno and smoked paprika nachos with guacamole. The main course would be Bunny Ain’t No Kind of Rider quinoa salad with salsa, feta cheese, cashews, and chipotle dressing. For dessert, I would serve Hissing Fauna grand marnier chocolate fountain with strawberries, brandied pears, and lycees.
Well all i have to say to this is that Soup is Good Food, and it makes a good meal! but we all know that…
I would make mushroom tarts with white wine and thyme for Kishi Bashi! We’d have some good dark beer to go with it, of course. Then there would be a dessert bar with cream puffs and macarons and palmiers!
I would make homemade pizza rolls (because I saw that today and I am still drooling from it) with Andrew Jackson Jihad, because they are awesome.
I would probably make veggie gyros and bake vegan carrot cake sandwich cookies for Bridge & Tunnel!

I would fix a little devilish dish, cuban chicken for alkaline trio.
An all vegan, locally-grown Tabbouli, with the addition of Falafel, for Neutral Milk Hotel.

The answer is always cheeseburgers, and always with Randy Travis. Every time.
I would make a vegan feast for Radiohead. My favorite salad of kale, mango, and pumpkin seeds with lemon olive oil dressing, followed by stuffed roasted artichokes, and avocado chocolate pudding for dessert.
I would have Counting Crows over, and feed them some of the down home Texas food I imagine they would love: fried chicken, red beans and rice, and collard greens.
I would love to cook for My Morning Jacket. Since they’re from the South, I’d make them one of my favorite Southern meals – barbequed pork loin with baked beans, spicy corn on the cob, and jalepeno cornbread. For dessert, I’d make a key lime pie!
The Band would definitely be Fitz and the Tantrums and we would make etouffee!
I’d shock the boys from Walk the Moon with out of this world bar-b-que ribs and strawberry cupcakes. 🙂
I would make brunch for she and him. Cranberry scones, eggs, biscuits, and so much more. We could chat about music and so much more over a perfect meal.
I would cook spaghetti and bean balls for mates of state!
