“Wait, you can make marshmallows?” That’s how our current Book of the Month, Marshmallow Madness by Shauna Sever, begins. How does it end? Very happily, with a container full of homemade marshmallows. If you are a connoisseur of the fluffy sweets, then you must pick up this book!
Every time a coworker saw this book sitting on my desk, they said, “Oooh, the cover is puffy!” Yes, indeed! No cuteness is spared in the design of this book. The cover leaves no mystery as to what you’ll find inside. You’ll want to know not only how in the world to make your own marshmallows, but how to get them to look as adorable as the purple swirlies, pink flowers, and rainbow cubes featured on the front.
This is a well laid-out cookbook with beautiful color pictures, easy-to-follow directions, and thorough background information. The recipes range from sugary and fruity flavored treats to “grown up” flavored snacks like margarita and pineapple-rosemary.
To test this cookbook, we had a mini ‘mallow match of our own — ‘March-mallow Madness’ — in the office. Stylist Annie made the book’s Minty Mallow Cookie Sandwiches (wow), Test Engineer Caitlin made the Birthday Cake Marshmallows (adorably delicious), and I made the Deeply Chocolate Marshmallows (yum). Each of us agreed that the recipes were much easier to produce than we expected. Since they weren’t so difficult, it was easy to make ’em look real purdy!

While it was a close competition, the winner of our office ‘March-mallow Madness’ came out to be Caitlin’s rendition of the Birthday Cake Marshmallow, pictured in the center, above!

If you participated in a food competition, what would be your winning dish?
My winning dish would be my six layer rainbow cake! The cake would be made from scratch with an old variant on a recipe for my mam-maw’s pound cake. There is only six layers because I love the look of a beautiful purple buttercream frosting to top off the yummy-ness!
My winning dish is my Chocolate Chipotle Chili. I found the recipe originally on NPR’s website, years ago, as a fun re-imagining of classic Superbowl foods. I’ve made it so often, though, and changed the recipe so much, that I think I can safely call it my own.
I too have made a chili dish with chocolate and adobe that I found on NPR recently!! Boy was it smoky and spicy…
I love food, and if I was making a dish for a cooking competition, I’d invent something new- Like a grilled cheese made with macaroni and cheese or a cupcake inspired by cherry pie!
I would have entered the contest with my signature “Julia’s Sweet Tooth Pie”. It has banana-raisin cream filling and topped with a layer or rich dark chocolate. I always make it for my family and friends [:
My winning dish would be my Classicly Simple Brussels Sprouts. These adorable little greenies are roasted off in an oven with salt, pepper, and olive oil. They are almost like chips….except for the fact that my hips don’t hate me. 🙂
My winning dish is a toss-up between my two absolute favorite things to make; brown butter lobster tail risotto adapted from a Giada de Laurentiis recipe and chicken pot pie adapted from Ina Garten. I love cooking with seafood; a plus considering I live in Rhode Island with a local fisherman, but the chicken pot pie I make is to die for! Overall, I have found that everything tastes its best when you take your time, add some specials touches and include lots of love.
This is a tough one. I would probably go with french onion soup topped with crusty bread and gruyere or havarti cheese. Even my seven year old daughter loves it!
My winning dish would be my famous Midori Cake! Its a recipe my mom remember her mother making and includes Midori Liquer, coconut and pistachio pudding, yuM!
Lemon, raspberry, peach pie!
Pizza! you can put anything on it (well almost anything) I would top mines with a white wine sauce, sundried tomatoes, ….spinach! yeah not very original but something i would love!
Definitely quiche. It’s simple, filling, and, better yet, French! I’d mix in spinich and leeks for an easy yet satisfying win… And then put my trophy on display.
My winning dish would be my homemade chicken enchiladas including tortillas and sauce made from scratch
In a food competition, the winning dish I would enter would be my Enchilada Casserole – three layers of whole-wheat tortilla + ground turkey (instead of beef), baked in a pie plate in the oven, topped with sauce and cheese at each layer, it is a healthy take on a traditional Mexican dish (4 servings @ ~350 calories for a very filling slice) that is still PACKED full of spice and flavor! Mmmmm.
Not an easy question, but I definitely know the answer: Italian lasagna! Trust me, it’s better with pesto than with tomato sauce. Easy to make, easy to love!
This is a tough one; I love to concoct new recipes for family all the time! My favorite is my yummy/healthy portobello pepper wrap. You saute portobello mushroom strips with red bell pepper strips in a little olive oil , add some chopped fresh spinach and cook until wilted. Dash on some salt and pepper to taste, divide between soft whole wheat wraps, sprinkle on some feta cheese, and add some vinaigrette if desired, (I don’t but my hubby does). Roll up and eat with a cup of soup for a fast and yummy lunch! Yep, I would make this and then eat all the leftovers myself.
My winning dish is probably my coffee pudding… they are seriously to die for!
My winning dish would be Salted Caramel Cupcakes!!
In a cooking competition, my winning dish would be Grandma’s passed down lemon cake. It is my absolute favorite sweet!
My winning dish would be jambalaya with chicken and shrimp! I often add fresh chiles or a hint of smoky BBQ sauce to give it an extra zing!
My winning dish would be Lamb Burgers with a Feta cheese spread! These burgers are delish!
My winning dish would be my family’s whoopie pies…. YUM!!! Mini chocolate cakes with thick cold icing in the middle… !!!
If I entered a cooking competition, my winning recipe would be my great–grandmother’s tea cake recipe that was passed down to me. It’s so simple, but I’m the only grandchild or great-grandchild to even bother with them. Now, everyone wants me to make them!
My winning dish would be my Vanilla Streusel Coffee Cake. It is so light and delicious, and great for tea time or brunch. It is most complimented with a topping of chopped walnuts mixed with vanilla and brown sugar.
My dish would for sure be my signature maple bacon butter cupcakes. A lovely dense butter cupcake topped with homemade maple glaze and salty, sweet, crunchy bits of candied bacon! So deliciously sweet! The bacon make these both intimidating and intriguing to eat. Everytime I bring these somewhere people seem hesitant at first but when they bite in they are pleasantly surprised at how wonderfully the slight saltiness of the bacon compliments the sweetness of the maple… it helps that they look so lovely!
I think I would make a traditional Mexican dish called “Gorditas”. They are delish. My Grandma made her own secret version of it and it is always a killer at parties. I love that it is the ‘secret recipe’ in the family. Mmm…I really want some now.
My choice would be my “I know everyone does it” but mine is so so good Crock Pot Pot Roast. The meat falls off the bone, the potatoes mash themselves and the carrots retain a bit of snap. I jazz up the gravy, topping it off with a dash of butter after I’ve used a stick mixer to make it creamy. Put everything back it the gravy and decide whether to eat the whole thing myself! Retro goodness.
Yah! I love making sweet treats. My winning dish would be my vanilla cupcakes baked with a delicious swirl of raspberry jam in the middle. I like to make them because they don’t need frosting and they taste fruity and delicious:)
My winning dish for a food competition would be a fabulous, 3-tiered cake made not only by myself, but my fellow Cake Club members/ friends 🙂 It would be a grand, elegant cake: White fondant, red gum paste flowers and black royal icing piping! It would be tasty and very fun to create 🙂
If I competed in a cooking competition, what would be my winning dish? Hmmm… Let me think. I think it would be my amazing home made double decker pizza. The crust is soft and flavorful because of a secret ingredient added for taste and texture. I make the thick sauce myself and flavor it to Italian perfection. And lastly I top both layers with copious amounts of cheese, (spicy) sausage, pepperoni, and olives, both green and black. Then I stack the pizzas, one on top the other, and bake until the cheese is warm and bubbly! Served with a light salad and sparkling mineral water with a hint of lemon, this is the perfect Saturday evening meal!
My winning dish would be my three cheese lasagne. Four layers of pasta, tomato meat sauce, and my three secret cheeses makes everyone come back for seconds. It even tastes good as left-overs.
My winning dish would be my 4-Cheese Lasagna. Well the recipe and credit is due to my grandmother. It is my grandmother’s perfected recipe I follow. The dish is the epitome of homemade, hearty comfort food. The sauce itself is better the longer you leave it to simmer on the stovetop. I can not reveal to many details on the ingredients, as it is a secret recipe. But I can tell you that there are never leftovers.
Definitely by stuffed lasagna shells! Family tradition made with ground beef, Italian sausage, ricotta cheese and some secret ingredients! Everyone loves it!
I make a fabulous passion fruit cheesecake. This dessert tops off any meal. It is light yet very satisfying.
While it may be a seasonal dish, my “Christmas Crunch” would definitely win. It’s just Chex with brown sugar and a whole lotta butter, but it’s so darn good!
My husband and I came in 2nd place at a Grilled Cheese Grill-off with our “American in Paris” Grilled Cheese – Bacon, Blue Cheese & Apple. It was delicious and I maintain that it would hold it’s own in any food competition! 😉
My mom and I make these every holiday season: pretzels dipped in white chocolate and covered with sprinkles! The contrast of the sweet and salty is delicious!!
My Chocolate Crinkle Cookies, which are always admired, and much too delicious to stop eating.
My best dishes are always sweet dishes. I think my winner might be chocolate cupcakes stuffed with chocolate chip peanut butter cookie dough (egg free, so no worries there!), topped with marshmallow topping. Homemade marshmallow, of course! Hmm… Marshmallow Madness would just push these cupcakes to the next level, I think!
My winning dish would probably be burritos! I make my guacamole with fresh avocados and I do the meat myself (cooking, spices, etc.) and then I melt some cheese onto an organic pita, add the meet and then make it up like a taco. Although, I love adding mango slices when they’re in season. It’s to DIE for. And none of the ingredients fall out of the pita. It’s so delicious. I love making burritos. Every night if I could!
Also Layne, I’m with you on the Chex with butter! Sounds unhealthy, but so good! 😀
I would make my mother’s orange cake. You boil oranges and blend them, using the amazing puree as the base of the cake. As an added bonus, it’s also gluten free as it’s made with almond meal! This is such a moist and delicious cake. This has always been a winner with every person who has ever tried it.
If I had a winning dish, it would be my chocolate chip cookies . I know, everyone says this but mine are truly the most delicious!!

I would win with my chocolate and peanut butter rice krispie treats! Simple, but they never fail to be delicious.
I would make my Mammy’s delicious pumpkin roll cake. I have been making this for 30 years. Every time an easy, peazy no fail recipe!
My dish would be delicious gourmet grilled cheese made with shredded mozzarella and tomato slices on fresh sourdough bread. I even sprinkle a little cheese on the outside of the sandwich before I finish grilling it, leaving a yummy cheese crisp on the bread!
My winning dish would definitely be my spinach pesto and mozzarella panini! The perfect comfort food!
I make a mean dish of Easy Mac. Yep. You read that right. I can’t even cook well enough to do stovetop Kraft dinner, I have to do the microwavable version 😀
My great grandma’s lemon pound cake, “Omi Cake!” It is made with lots and lots of butter and a delicious lemony icing! She used to make it for almost each family member every for their birthday. It’s to die for!
I just made the best Creme Brulee Cheesecake. It has a vanilla wafer crust and vanilla bean paste in the filling. I topped it with Demerara sugar and carmelized it with my new mini blow torch! It’s gotten rave reviews, even from people who “aren’t into cheesecake.” Love it.
I would win for my Chocolate Chai Spice cupcakes with Chai Spice Buttercream frosting.
Homemade S’Mores! I made these for my boyfriend’s family, and they almost fell over. Homemade grahm crackers ala a Neiman Marcus cookbook I got when I was 15, homemade marshmallows toasted over the fireplace, and Scharffen Berger milk chocolate.
I would put in MeMa’s Black Bottom Gumbo – hearty, inexpensive and subtly spicy……

My delicious White Chocolate Chunk Blonde Brownies.
I had to improvise on the ingredients when making them last summer because I didn’t have one, and it was the best improvisation ever! (almond extract in place of vanilla, who knew?) They are buttery and wonderful 🙂
My winning dish would be my chocolate chip cookie recipe. It’s a basic recipe and I do absolutely nothing to change it, but I’ve had legions of people tell me that my chocolate chip cookies are best cookies they’ve ever tasted. I guess I’m just a cookie-whisperer or something. 😉

My Viennese Crescents. Ever since I got the original recipe from my ex’s mom and tweaked it to my liking, I am barely able to keep them stocked in the cookie jar at my house! Delish!!!

My winning dish would be ‘Maid of Honor Tarts.’ My wonderful Grandmother gave me this recipe. ‘Maid of Honor Tarts’ are a tart made with homemade pie crust, then filled with homemade raspberry jam, top the jam with a rice mix which is kind of like cake and then drizzle confectioner sugar icing on top. Mmmm…these are delicious and addicting 🙂
My winning dish would be my roasted garlic lemon pepper chicken- my fiance demands that I make it at least once a week!
My winning dish would be the “Lemon Meringue Pie Bar” that I make for Easter. It’s light, the perfect combination of sweet and tangy, with a cool lemon custard like filling with airy meringue all on top of a short bread crust. You get all the flavour of the pie, without having to go through the pain of making a homemade crust and it takes half the time.
Pizza! All made from scratch!
It would have to be my chocolate coffee ice cream pie. Layers of chocolate and coffee ice cream in an Oreo pie crust with a mocha sauce and more crumbled Oreos on top. Any time I go home, my dad requests that I make it. Even my mom, who doesn’t like coffee likes this pie.

Oooh! What a fun book! My winning dish would be my Ooey Gooey Chocolate cake! It’s so fudge-y and delicious and I make it with 100% dark chocolate. It’s always the birthday request. Yum yum!

The most wonderful cookies I’ve ever made are coconut thumbprints with salted caramel centers. I got the recipe from Martha Stewart magazine. I made a couple batches months ago and people at work are STILL talking about them.
My winning dish would definitely be my semi-famous Forbidden Cookies. They have honey, milk AND white chocolate, and they always come out chewy and soft and perfect – and keep for ages!
I would enter my Grandmother’s pound cake. Our family makes it for every family event and is absolutely heavenly. We never update the recipe or substitute ingredients because you can’t mess with perfection!

I absolutely LOVE baking, and one of my most successful creations was Chocolate Cupcakes dipped in a chocolate ganache, topped with Oreo buttercream and finished off with a cute little mini oreo. This would be my dish. =)

That’s a tough one since I have so many great ideas… I think I’d have to go with my Florentine Mac n Cheese. It’s a decedent dish with 4 Itallian cheeses blended together into a super creamy sauce poured over cavatappi noodles and spinach. The special trick is the pinch of nutmag added to bring out the flavors. Such a delight. Delicious and a perfect way to get little ones to eat greens, while making adults feel young at heart!
I would win with my family’s Lumpiang Shanghai recipe. Our lumpias are just the right size and always have the perfect crunch. Our savory snack always ends up on people’s list of favorite foods at parties.
Definitely my Tempeh Tetrazzini. A new spin on an old classic that always reminds me of my childhood. My mom used to make chicken tetrazzini for me whenever I had a rough day at school. She always let me pile on extra parmesan cheese on top because…well…who doesn’t like extra cheese. Now it’s my go-to dish when I’ve had a rough day at work in a strange new city to remind me of home. I’ve put a few different new spins on it since I’ve been a vegetarian for about five years and replaced the chicken with tempeh and added a few more kinds of fresh mushrooms. It’s always just what I need to remind me that everything’s going to be okay.

My winning dish would surely be my raspberry dark chocolate coffee cake with cinnamon ginger streusel. It is crumbly, towering, and an embarrassingly easy to finish at a brunch.
Mine would be Pecan Pie Cheesecake. I have to make it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’m English and learnt how to make it in an effort to impress my new Mother In Law. I guess it worked!

My pear pie with gruyere cheese in the crust would win! The recipe is based on the Pushing Daisies pie that Chuck would make for her aunts to cheer them up. The sweet/savory mix is an instant hit every time I make it and it is what all my friends ask me to bring to potlucks!
If I participated in a food competition my winning dish would definetly be my maple bacon doughnuts. The soft melt in your mouth doughnuts with the crunch of the cripsy little bacon bits all topped off with a warm maple sugar glaze. can you resist? I think not! 🙂
I have always been a better baker, but my signature dish is tuna noodle casserole. It’s made with Fettuccini pasta covered in rich butter sauce with light flaky pieces of tuna (from the can) to make it a very light and airy dish. For dessert (because everyone expects it) my double chocolate chip cookies – which I make completely dairy-free. These mouth watering cookies are always gone within minutes and the best part is a person with a dairy allergy can satisfy their sweet tooth.
I think my winning dish would be my petit fours. Layers of pound cake and raspberry jam topped with marzipan, delicious!
My winning dish would be…well I don’t really even have a name for it! It’s something I came up with one day. It’s a bowl with quinoa on the bottom, and on top of that is chicken pieces cooked in coconut oil, in a marinara sauce with mushrooms, green onions, red/green/yellow/orange bell peppers, with crushed pistachios on top!
