Page Turners: Life in a Bubble Has Never Looked So Good

It’s an undoubtedly incredible work, but I want to know how Melvin Sokolsky came up with the concept for this 1963 Harper’s Bazaar editorial. I mean, really, who sits down and says, “Guys, I have a brilliant idea. Let’s put a couture-covered model in a plastic bubble and suspend it in various places around Paris”?

Though one can’t be sure of this Glinda-esque editorial’s origins, I’d postulate it was influenced by the Space Race. After all, the bubble’s resemblance to Sputnik I is rather on the ball, and the editorial was shot in the same year that John Glenn became the first man to orbit the Earth. Could this editorial have kicked off the full-fledged Space Age fashion trend that began with Andre Courrèges’ eponymous collection in 1964?

Potentially overlooked influence aside, there’s no doubt that this editorial is pretty darn enthralling. So, go ahead–take a minute off from your busy day to page through these images and let yourself be carried off by the dream-state of elegance that they invoke.

I wonder how they did this? I mean its not like they had Photoshop around to remove the cable or remove reflections from the bubble. But otherwise very clever
