What’s that, 1971 ‘Teen Magazine? You dare me to wear an armful of bracelets? Ooh, I’m shaking in my shiny pink pumps. Wait, now you dare me mix prints using that shirt with those pants? Err, I’m not so sure about it.
Though this vintage editorial was meant to encourage cutting-edge style, much of it now is now a barrel of retrospective laughs, much like our recent Fashion Faux Pas-t contest, and it’s too good not to share!
For example, would you “put your hair in twenty braids” woven with ribbon? Would it look terrible if you did twenty-one? Or, how do you feel about painting flowers in your hair? Actually, wait, could someone first explain to me how that even works? What about wearing a velour sweater to a dressy event? I’m pretty sure that if I followed through with any of these recommendations as a 1970’s teen, I’d look back at the result and groan. ‘Course ,there are a few good suggestions in this editorial, but overall, it’s a riot.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, upon this editorial’s advice I’m off to send a poem to my boyfriend and sign my girlfriend’s name. Think it will go over well?
