It’s the stuff that nightmares are made of — imagine waking from an uneasy slumber only to discover that you’ve inexplicably transformed into another kind of creature. Your body feels strange and foreign. Your senses and instincts are different. And, to make matters worse, you have a tail — a fluffy one, at that! Our featured book, The Meowmorphosis by Coleridge Cook and Franz Kafka, deals with that exact existential dilemma — with feline flair.

Quirk Books publishes the prolifically peculiar with their parodies of classic literature available in the public domain. They’ve brought us such monstrous mash-ups as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Android Karenina. And now, The Meowmorphosis eccentrically embellishes Kafka’s novella, The Metamorphosis, causing Kafka’s original story to undergo its own metamorphosis. Instead of the terrible vermin Kafka turned protagonist Gregor Samsa into, this time, Samsa becomes an adorable kitten, even though he went to bed the night before ‘feline’ fine.
Author Coleridge Cook does a terrific job of interjecting humor and wit into the preexisting story and structure of The Metamorphosiswithout being restricted by any textual limitations. Like Kafka’s Samsa, the main character endures the same helplessness and hopelessness of his strange new life, except that he’s just so darn cute on top of it all. As a human-sized kitty cat, he’s faced with absurd and surreal struggles in lieu of more seemingly appropriate snuggles.
Once Samsa realizes and accepts that he can no longer provide for his family in his current cuddly state, he strays from home, following his feline senses and urges, only to find himself in yet another Kafkaesque landscape similar to the author’s other seminal story, The Trial. The hilariously harrowing tale of this forlorn furry is written with delightfully dramatic detail, and it’s accompanied by funny illustrations and an exaggerated bio about Kafka himself.
Move over, Hello Kitty. Hello Kafka is more like it.
Whether you’re a lit lover or cat lover, this book will make you smile, and that’s something the original most likely won’t do! I wrote a book report on the original in twelfth grade, and I don’t recall anything LOL-worthy about it!

Nice question and interesting book 🙂 Well, if I could choose, I would hope to transform into a turtle, because it must be nice to live a slow life for once 🙂
if i were transformed into an animal without my will i would hope it would be a bat. I’m already a night person, and would love to fly through the sky as a bat & eat fruit. maybe bugs and be an all out bad ass.
I would have to say a squirrel. I love their energy and enthusiasm in everything they do. Plus, they’re adorable.
I would hope to be a bird of prey. This would give me the chance to ride the thermals and contemplate my new found identity. Plus, as a flying creature, I could view the world from a new perspective.
I’d want to be a dinosaur! A stegosarus or triceratops or apatosaurus, perhaps. It’d be so cool to be the only creature of my kind left alive, and scientists could learn a lot! 🙂
A dolphin – it would be so different to live in the ocean!
Really neat giveaway, thanks!
If I could be any animal I would have to choose a Giraffe. They are such beautiful creatures. Even though they live in the wild and eat leaves they are very elegant and classy animals. I would have to be a smaller giraffe however because they are clumbsy and I have not met anyone more clumbsy than myself. I am also ravished by the fact that they are not normally attacked by hunters such as lions. These preditors are scared of giraffes because they can attack prey with their front legs. Therefore without warning or reason I would hope to transform into a brown and yellow beautiful creature of heights.
Of course I would wish to be transformed into a cat, since cats are the world’s most perfect creatures!
A Meerkat, because I can stand up and stare at people creepily, plus I can run fast and burrow 🙂
I would like to turn into a cat actually. Then, I would be able to talk with my 3 cats. It would be interesting to find out what they really think about their lives and about me.
If I were transformed into an animal I would love to be a hedgehog! Aside from being my favourite of all creatures, I can look fearsome with my spikes whilst being just too darn adorable for words! Plus the fact that many people leave out milk for me in the winter – it will be an easy life 🙂
I would want to be an albatross. That way, I would be part of both the sea AND sky at the same time. And you can’t really beat that! 🙂
I would definitely be a cat. It would be magical to possess such grace and elegance that could only belong to a cat, and the I think that the mouse-catching experience would be very interesting. Being cute and cuddly wouldn’t hurt, either.
If I could be transformed into any animal it would likely be giraffe. Besides the fact that they are adorable and strange, I’ve always wondered (but not dared to YouTube) how they mate. Also it would literally take things to a whole notha level.
I love dogs, so it would be cool to transform into a dog. 🙂
I would choose to be a cat (in my own home, because I know how well they are treated).
If I were transformed into any animal I would hope to be a Cheetah. To be so elegant and beautiful and yet so fast and powerful would be an amazing experience.
I’d like to be a raven. They are highly intelligent, and also, I would love to fly! I’d have difficulties staying a vegetarian, though…
A penguin- they are adorable, look out for their own and are always dressed to the nines in their tuxedos
A tiger – powerful and elegant.
I think a cat would actually be one of my first choices – you do what you want, sleep a lot, and look very pretty! But I’d choose an apartment cat – with a yard available! – though 🙂
if i were to be transformed into an animal i would hope that i could be a sparrow. i would be able to fly anywhere i desired.
if I could be transformed into any animal I’d choose a moth. I’ve always felt a sort of empathy with this creature, because of her dusty appearance. moths are butterflies, but treated like ugly ones. they’re like the awkward school girl at the promenade that no one want to dance with.
A unicorn. Definately.
I would turn into either a bird or a salt water fish. I would love to explore an environment that humans don’t live in, meaning either the sky or the ocean. Plus I would have abilities humans don’t have, to either fly or breath underwater. Plus the ocean is so colorful and beautiful, but I would have to be careful since it’s so dangerous!
I would be a parrot so I could fly across the sky and everyone would smile at my beautiful colors.
I would be Winston the pug, Modcloth mascot extraordinaire. How wonderful to hang out with the Modcloth fam and hear about all the amazing new Modcloth clothes before the rest of the world!
A narwhal because come on it’s a narwhal!
I’d really hope I got to be some kind of small bird…I’d love to fly away and see the world from a different point of view.
I think I would enjoy being a cat, honestly. Endless naps, claws, and the ability to purr? Sounds awesome to me.
Oh most definitely a cat! They have it figured out – sleeping all day and living indoors!
lamprey because they embody that which kafka conveys; they are parasitic, they are entirely dependent upon another being for survival, they cannot communicate effectively with one another, they intrinsically repel company. becoming a lamprey would give a person the true metamorphic experience of complete unfamiliarity and chaos.
I would hope to be turned into a fox. They move with such a silent grace that I could never hope to have as a human. I’ve always loved the way foxes curl up and use their tails as pillows. I love to take naps more than anything in the world. How convenient it would be to have my own pillow when the inevitable alienation from society happened. Then i could just sleep off my loneliness.
When I think about it, I would honestly hope to be turned into a starfish. I’ve always wanted to see the inside of my stomach, and now, boom, inside out and engulfing my food. What a nice life. My stomach does all the work for me. Plus, not only do I have a stomach that turns inside out, I have two stomachs! Not one plain old human stomach, but two! Two starfish stomachs! Also, now that I’m a rockin’ starfish, I’m going to get into all sorts of crazy hijinks. If I happen to lose a limb or two in a starfish bar fight? Well, that would be just fine by starfish me. Thank starfish god that I have the power of regeneration. Ever heard of the saying ‘chicks love battle scars’? I hear chicks love regenerated limbs even more.
I would either be a cat (my favorite animal) or a bird so I could experience flying.
I would love to be a bald eagle and fly around anywhere. I could look down on land and feel invincible. It gets a little tiring living my daily life, so to soar through the skies would be a breath of fresh air. Literally!
i would hope to become a humming bird because they are both mysterious and beautiful.
I’d love to be some sort of flying bird. I don’t want to generalize and just say “bird,” because then I might be a horrible ostrich. Although a penguin might be fun…if there aren’t any seals around. I’d say being an owl would be pretty sweet. But I might be a vegetarian owl…
I would hope to be a humming bird. They are beautiful colors (not to mention colors that are usually very flattering on me)! They get treated to sweet red nectar from bright feeders. And they can fly… major bonus!
I would very much like to be a cat, they have the perfect life.
Defintely a dolphin because according to the Hitchhiker’s Guide they are the only survivors. Plus they can be both strong and defensive as well as sweet and playful. 🙂
i would like to turn into a panda. to freak people out seeing a ‘wild’ panda in north america would be awesome. while there wouldn’t be enough bamboo to eat, i would make due by making new friends with my fluffy, squishy cuteness, and hoping that my new friends will let me eat their bamboo plants they keep in their homes for decoration. then, after eating all their decorative bamboo plants, i could be the new decoration because black and white never go out of style! as a panda, i could be a personal friendly giant that will help keep you warm in winter and would help you keep your bamboo growth to a minimum.
I would turn into a narwhal for several reasons. 1) I’d have a freakin’ horn growing out of my head! 2) Narwhals are very trendy right now. 3) I’d have a freakin’ horn growing out of my head!
I would say a puppy. They seem to live an easy and relaxing life (plus head scratches).
If I were changed into any animal it would have to be a Meerkat. They are honestly adorable, are only a foot tall, and are not very violent animals. Plus, when I was little I was addicted to the show “Meerkat Manor.” It was like a mini soap opera, but with Meerkats.
A chameleon of course! That way I could change my look every day – with a little inspiration from ModCloth 🙂
I know they’re not the prettiest birds, but I would want to be a pigeon. They can fly (way cool), and people throw bread at them. FREE FOOD.
If I had to be transformed into a creature, I would probably want to be a mongoose. Mongoose are famous for fighting off cobras, mostly for funsies. SO HARDCORE.
I’ve always wanted to know what being a bird would be like. Were I to be magically transformed into one, I’m pretty sure I’d have the time of my life. First and foremost, I could FLY. I could also sing better than I ever have, climb sideways up trees, annoy people and squirrels, act cute and score free food from people (but probably not squirrels) and sleep high up near the stars with my head under my soft wing. Being a bird would be wonderful.
If I had a choice I would most definitely want to be a white tailed deer. They’re so adorable and graceful! They’re everywhere where I live, and I’ve always thought they were such elegant creatures. It’s always a treat to come across a deer when you’re walking through the woods.
I would hope to be transformed into a Bird of Paradise. They have gorgeous feathers that are long, fluffy, and colorful and they can soar over-well, paradise! Waters of cut turquoise, perfect sandy beaches, frothy waterfalls, and vast forests of coconut palms (mmm!).
I might actually be able to tolerate this version… Hated this book in AP Literature.
To follow up and actually answer your question: I wish I could become a collie dog. My parents used to have one, and they put her down two years ago this month. Collies are loyal and make absolutely perfect companions. I miss that dog (her name was Princess) every time I come home. If I could, I would adopt one right now. Apartment life and a teaching career don’t make that very easy. If I became a collie dog there would be no doubt that I would be craving a scratch and putting up my paw for a handshake. Being able to sprawl on the floor is pretty cool too!
I would HOPE to be a blue jay. ^.^ Then, flying isn’t just for dreaming and I would still look stylish while doing so.
I would transform into an Owl. Not only because owls are so Harry Potter-esque, but because I would love to fly anywhere I want and see the world whenever I feel like it. It would be amazing to have that kind of freedom.
if i had to change into an animal i would hope it would be a dog, because all dogs go to heaven right?;)
no, but i would want to be a dog because there so adored by many. plues there cute fun and loving.
If I were to transform into any animal I would hope to become a lion. Reason one, I would be able to keep my red locks (I would have to become a male lion) in place of a beautiful mane. Reason two, being on top of the food chain is always helpful when out in the wild. Nothing would get past my growl, fangs, and razer claws. Reason three, being able to be a cat would be amazing. Lion’s do purr!
Were I transformed into any creature, I would hope that it would be a gray tabby cat! Why a domestic cat? Because then I would have an owner to pet me, feed me, and love me. And so I could shred any hideous clothes in their closet! The Fashionable Feline strikes again!
Giant Squid. Because I would be such a mysterious creature to humans and I get to live in a habitat no human could ever possibly see personally. If you haven’t guessed I’m very antisocial : /.
I would honestly hope to be turned into a cat. I already behave so much like a feline that I feel the transformation wouldn’t be so hard to get used to.
– I love sunshine
– I love napping
– I love napping in the sunshine
– I love to cuddle
– BUT will only cuddle when I feel like cuddling and/or want something from my partner. otherwise I prefer to be left alone.
I love cats!
Well this one’s a no-brainer–a dog of course! I’d live in the lap of luxury and be adored by everyone (except cats). 🙂
Anyone that knows me would roll their eyes at my answer but I have to stick with a cat. I have a cat and she is the love of my life. I would love to see myself from her point of view; and overall just understand more about her. When I dye my hair and ask my cat how it looks.. what is she REALLY thinking when she looks at me like that. When I am walking down the street and I see a stray cat and I try to lure it over so I can pet it.. what is it thinking! Cats are so silly. Definite final answer.
I would transform into an owl, so that I may be able to visit Hogwarts as a carrier owl…
Yes, true answer!
Oh my gosh I LOVE harry potter! (sorry mod cloth!) 🙂
I would be a sweet spotted fawn so that I could explore the woods by day with graceful agility and then take naps in patches of moss among the ferns and forest animals.
I would be a wolf. They are strong and can fend for themselves if necessary, but also remain in a pack with their few trusted companions, for whom they would risk their lives, a sentiment that mirrors my own feelings in life.
I would choose to be a giraffe, because they are tall (I am not), live in sunny Africa (not the snowy Midwest), and are super duper cool. 🙂
I would be a dragon. No other animal is so feared or admired as the dragon. Dragon legends can be found around the world as multiple cultures cite them in their mythology. Dragons are fierce, sleek, shining creatures with cool intelligence glimmering in their heavy-lidded eyes. They are creatures of the elements, their jewel-tone scales reflecting the fire within. Symbols of good fortune to some, harbingers of destruction to others, dragons nevertheless are dangerously beautiful creatures that you can’t help be drawn to. I’d love to snap open taloned wings and soar, stretch my fearsome jaw to the sky, and rage fire to the the cold glitter of stars as their own fires echo my fearsome challenge, millions of light years away.
When is the winner of this contenst going to be announced?
Either I need to be on here more than I already am or ModCloth needs to advertise more… 🙁
