Who Do You Write Like?

Fancy yourself the next Hemingway? See if it’s true by dropping an excerpt of your writing into I Write Like, a website that analyzes your writing and generates your famous literary match. If your results say you’re channeling Dan Brown instead, though, don’t fret. HuffPo revealed that I Write Like’s creators modeled the site after software for e-mail spam filters, meaning its text analysis is primarily keyword based, and consequently misses stylistic cues such as rhythm and punctuation. Still, that doesn’t mean it’s any less fun plugging in the lyrics to “Alejandro” and seeing which wordsmith pops out.

    Fun idea

  3. Mandy (ModCloth) 07/20/2010 at 2:18 pm #

For one of my blog posts I got Steven King, then tried another and got James Joyce… Interesting.

    Cool site though! <3

  4. k 07/20/2010 at 2:19 pm #

  5. t 07/20/2010 at 2:43 pm #

one of my academic articles gave me david foster wallace as well!

  6. Lynsi 07/20/2010 at 3:16 pm #

I write like Margaret Mitchell, David Foster Wallace, Dan Brown, and Kurt Vonnegut depending on which paper I submit. The one that was analyzed to be like Margaret Mitchell was the worst paper I ever wrote in my opinion.

  7. Samantha 07/20/2010 at 4:42 pm #

I got David Foster Wallace and Vladimir Nabokov.. apparently a lot of people get wallace o:

  8. Susie 07/20/2010 at 4:51 pm #

Nine times out of ten I got James Joyce…that other time I got Vladimir Nabokov. My two favorite writers! Not bad!

  9. Dani 07/20/2010 at 5:41 pm #

it definitely is keyword-based. i submitted a descriptive piece and got dan brown, then submitted a classification essay i wrote about harry potter, and got j.k. rowling. i was not shocked haha fun idea though!

  10. Jessica 07/20/2010 at 6:55 pm #

I apparently write like stephenie meyer. hu.

  11. Clare 07/20/2010 at 7:15 pm #

I got stephen king. I’m confused now!! It’s so funny and a great way to amuse myself if I’m bored, though.

  12. seethingrain 07/20/2010 at 7:28 pm #

It is a bit faulty but fun, nonetheless! I end up getting H. P. Lovecraft for most of my formal writing and thesis papers. I also submitted an analysis I wrote on a musical composition and got Kurt Vonnegut, which is disturbing…

  13. Norma Hernandez 07/20/2010 at 9:21 pm #

    I got Dan Brown. I think it’s nifty 🙂

(I don’t think Mr. Brown would have used the word “nifty”!)

  14. Grad Student 07/20/2010 at 9:21 pm #

I also got David Foster Wallace when I put in an academic paper……

  15. siobhan 07/21/2010 at 1:54 am #

i put in a couple of essays and short storys and i ended getting Raymond Chandler over and over again huh

  16. Shayy 07/21/2010 at 6:44 am #

Apparently I write like Dan Brown.
This could either be a good or bad thing.. haha.

  17. Olivia 07/21/2010 at 7:59 am #

I got Stephen king for something I wrote off the top of my head, and then everything copied from journals/posts I got Cory Doctorow (who i’ve never heard of).

  18. Jenna 07/21/2010 at 9:05 am #

I got Chuck Palahniuk, Dan Brown, and Harry Harrison for three separate story beginnings. Interesting.

  19. lydia 07/21/2010 at 10:05 am #

I put in one of my favourite poems i’ve written and got Jane Austen.

I am very okay with this =)

  20. the clothing menu 07/21/2010 at 1:57 pm #

ha..i write like cory doctorow. i just had to look him up and i think he’s a young adult author…interesting

  21. Lauren 07/21/2010 at 2:33 pm #

Cory Doctorow, a young man I’ve never read, a blogger/science fiction author from Trotskyite parents. This might have something to do with using old Xanga entries. Political rants turned up Nabokov. I’m glad to see there’s a variety of authors given.

  22. Steph 07/21/2010 at 11:36 pm #

I put in a chapter from the novel I was writing and got Dan Brown. Lame ._.

  23. gloria 07/21/2010 at 11:59 pm #

    i love this site.
    i got Sir Conan Doyle

  24. Paula 07/22/2010 at 12:49 pm #

    Isaac Asimov!

  25. Ellen 07/22/2010 at 12:53 pm #

David Foster Wallace is very popular… [I do hope this is our only resemblence, or rather said: was our only resemblence,]

  26. Emily 07/23/2010 at 12:35 am #

Ugh…apparently I write like Stephenie Meyer. Though her writing style is amazing and I should be flattered, but the movies and screaming teenage girls that surround her books just leave a bad taste in my mouth after saying her name.

  27. Suzanne 07/23/2010 at 5:36 am #

I plugged in an old MySpace blog I wrote 4 years ago and got Cory Doctorow 🙂 But somebody on here already told me that would happen, LOL.

  28. Crykit 07/26/2010 at 7:32 pm #

    Kurt Vonnegut

“Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. was an American novelist who wrote works blending satire, black comedy, and science fiction.”

Delightful! Even though I may not write science fiction, the other two sound about right for me. 😉

  29. Madeline 07/27/2010 at 4:32 pm #

Chuck Palahniuk. That’s who I write like, that’s interesting. Never heard of him before. Anyone else hear of him? Anyone else get him? If not…cool. I like being different!

  30. Madeline 07/30/2010 at 3:08 pm #

I just found out he writes horror. I don’t. But then again it’s the style of the writing. I am a writer of anything possible. From a diary to a novel to a poem to a short story to sheet music to lyrics to descriptions for clothes to greeting cards to notes to anything and everything. I write any form of thing.

  31. Madeline 07/30/2010 at 3:14 pm #

I also write like william shakespeare.

  32. Madeline 07/31/2010 at 7:21 pm #

I looked up some stuff about this site and it’s not even accurate. Oh well, it’s still fun to check it out!
