Make a Super Simple — and Chic — Head Chain with This DIY

You’ve likely noticed the trend toward body jewelry this summer (upper arm bracelets, body chains, even thigh chains). Try on the look with minimal commitment by making this DIY head chain.

Tape measure
Gold-tone or brass chain (about 5 feet)
Jump rings (2)
Pairs of chain nose pliers (2)
Pair of wire cutters (1)

1. Measure from the start of your hairline, over the top of your head, to the top of the base of your skull (where it begins to curve toward your neck). Our measurement is 10½ inches.

2. Cut one piece of chain at this length (10½ inches). Add ½ inch to the base number, and cut two pieces of chain at this total length (11 inches). Finally, add ½ inch to the latest total number, and cut two pieces of chain at this length (11½ inches).

3. Holding a pair of chain nose pliers in each hand, grasp a jump ring on each of its “halves.” Do not pull it apart to open it. Instead, use one of the pliers to twist one “half” of the ring toward you, and the other pliers to push the other “half” away from you.

4. Continuing to grasp one half of the jump ring with a pair of pliers, put down the other pair of pliers. In the following order, place the chain lengths onto the jump ring: 11½ inches, 11 inches, 10½ inches, 11 inches, 11½ inches. Pick up the second pair of pliers to close the jump ring around the chains. Use the same twisting method as per step 3 to close the jump ring, but this time, bring the ends of the jump ring toward each other until they “click.”

5. Open the other jump ring as per step 3, then place the opposite ends of the chain lengths onto this jump ring in the same order as step 4. Keep the links as consistently in line as possible. Tip: It helps if you lay the chains on a table while you are lining them up. Close the jump ring as per step 4.

You’re done! Admire your handiwork, and enjoy the newest accessory in your stylish collection.

Design variations:
-Use different outermost chains for a textured look.
-Add beads or charms in a color scheme you like.
-Add more chain layers to increase the draping effect.
