The Style Gallery is a great new way for you to view, love, and share outfit photos. It’s meant to showcase all the expressive, creative, and inspirational personalities of our community!
We caught up with Amy, of the blog Amy Flying a Kite, to get the inside scoop on her style. This Canada native started her blog when she was just 16. She feels that being home-schooled really helps her express her style with no holds barred. In the last year, she’s taken up the banjo, and you can steal a peek at an exclusive photo of her fingerpicking with her pooch as an audience. Amy’s style plays on romantic, prairie-esque looks, but with a decided edge. Perhaps she’s inspired by the old books she loves to read, and the landscape of her hometown, Calgary.
What’s the story behind the name of your blog?
When I think of flying a kite, I think of a string being the only thing between you and the sky. It’s a lot like life. We’re all dreamers, we want to grow wings, but some things keep us from taking flight. My blog reflects life in the same way. I have my head in the clouds (like a kite) but my feet on the ground (like a person flying the kite). The same can be said for my outfit choices. I like to wear whimsical garments others may not be bold enough to wear, but I never want to be too outlandish like Lady Gaga.
You started your blog in 2009 when you were just 16. How do you feel your style has evolved over the past few years?
My style has certainly evolved. As the years go by, I become more courageous. In 2009, I was wearing two-inch heels, now I’m wearing five-inch. I think with each year, you find yourself a little bit more. Some of the things I wore when I was 16 I’d never wear now… not even to bed.
Do you think being home-schooled has influenced your style? For instance, does not having the pressure and influence of other high schoolers leave more room for creativity in the way you dress?
Being home-schooled has certainly influenced my style. When you’re home-schooled, you spend a lot of minutes underneath bed sheets with a computer on your lap. It’s so easy to wear pajamas and suits made of cotton comfort. On the contrary, you don’t have teachers or bodies around you judging what you wear. Luckily for me and my blog, I used the freedom in home-schooling to feed my creativity. I used the creativity to dress the way I wanted to. I remember when I was young, I wanted to wear dresses, but I worried there’d be an assembly at school and that my dress would get caught in my tights. I guess when you home-school, you don’t have to worry about things like that. You dress entirely for yourself.
What books are you reading right now?
At the moment, I’m reading Gothic short stories and Frontier stories. The last two I read were called The Splendid Idle Forties by Gertrude Atherton and The Ranch at the Wolverine by B. M. Bower.
How long have you played the banjo? Is there any other instrument you’d like to learn how to play?
I’ve played the banjo since August 2011. There is nothing in the world quite as magical as fingerpicking my banjo and singing. If life were but a dream, I’d play the Dobro, fiddle, and accordion, too!
And of course, we want to know what your favorite blogs to read are!
Yippy! I spend most of my time reading Korean and Swedish blogs….Here’s a few blogs I’ve bookmarked recently: Mellow Mayoness, Elsa Billgren, and Fashion Zen.
We asked Amy where she’d wear her flirty namesake frock. She said it’d be the perfect piece to steal the stage in.
Amy would don her namesake dress decked out with the Self-Trot Fashionista Ring, Clasp Me Close Belt, Nest Friends Forever Necklace, Fleur De Bloom Heel, and Sock About It in Text. How would you style this delightful dress?

I am very young (13) and hope to grow to become an author. I will keep combing the Internet for you over the years for you to give me fresh ideas and inspiration!!!
You even look like Katniss Everdeen a bit-the star from the huge hit movie and book trilogy The Hunger Games!!!
