The Style Gallery is a great new way for you to view, love, and share outfit photos. It’s meant to showcase all the expressive, creative, and inspirational personalities of our community!
If you blog it, they will come. That very well could be the motto for Christine of My Style Pill, whose blog helped turn her love of fashion into a profession. Now a personal stylist, Christine continues to wow us with her ability to mix and match pieces of her wardrobe so they feel fresh and new – a quality that makes her blog so approachable and inspiring.
Take a look at her favorite ModCloth items, and read on to see how she styled her summer-ready namesake dress!
As a personal stylist, what’s the most fun job you’ve ever taken on?
One of my current clients has been my most fun job so far because of her openness to try new things. We have been doing a ton of shopping to update her wardrobe, and, from there, styling and creating fresh, fun outfits. I love seeing her confidence grow each time we meet; it really is the best feeling.
Do you have any recommendations for a girl trying to get into the personal styling biz? How do you build up your clients?
Honestly, I fell into it. I started out by styling all my friends, and one day, one of them said that I should be doing this for a living. I started talking about it and listing it as a service on the blog, and people just started contacting me. My client list has been growing every since, mostly through word of mouth, which is great!
What staples should every woman have in her closet?
1. A classic, tailored trench.
2. A pair of riding boots, either slightly heeled or flat, in black or brown.
3. An everyday, cognac-colored tote because it goes with every color and acts as a great neutral.
4. A soft and comfy denim shirt. You will find that you can pair this simple item with numerous other pieces in your closet to create effortless-looking outfits.
Are there any trends you’re forecasting for fall?
More interesting color combinations, such as black, maroon, and white.
Any tips for staying chic on those days when you kinda just want to stay in your jammies?
I always feel that much more chic when I throw on a cute striped shirt and a pair of my favorite jeans with either a ballet flat or a low wedge. I add a swipe of red lipstick and slip on a trench, et voilà , insta-chic!
You’re from Seattle originally. Do you feel like your style has changed since you left it for the Big Apple?
Most definitely, but it really all started when I came back from Paris after my junior year abroad and started exploring my personal style. But, I started feeling a little out of place when I would wear or try different types of looks or trends. As much as I love Seattle, I adore New York for the fact that you can walk out of your apartment wearing anything.
What blogs do you use for style inspiration?
I love Atlantic-Pacific, This Time Tomorrow, B. Jones Style, Kendi Everyday, Sterling Style, Eat Sleep Wear, Keiko Lynn, Saucy Glossie, Kansas Couture, Cupcakes and Cashmere, The Glamourai, Fa-Lo-Me, [and] Brooklyn Blonde.
You’re a master at maximizing what you already have in your closet. Any tips for figuring out how to wear pieces multiple ways?
My mother always told me, when you buy something, make sure it goes with at least five things in your closet. With these words of advice, you really can’t go wrong when it comes to remixing your closet. The goal is to create a cohesive and working wardrobe, and if everything in it (no matter how different the items) can in some way, shape, or form be paired together, then you are already on the right track to remixing!
