Meet Kelli Murray

bom_main02Kelli Murray, whose blog is dubbed the same name, makes us want to head to her home in SoCal stat and whip together an edgy, beachy outfit that’s just as effortless as her ensembles. Kelli rocks looks that are perfect for her sunny beach town, but it’s not just her style we’re swooning over – we could probably take a few style pointers from her one-year-old daughter, who often graces Kelli’s blog posts with cuteness. Kelli’s blog isn’t all about fashion – she’s also a talented graphic designer and artist. You can live the California dream vicariously by perusing the pages of Kelli’s blog, as well as lusting after her ModCloth faves and rad namesake dress.

As an artist and a graphic designer, where do you go for inspiration?
I am always inspired by fashion, nature, and the beauty of my surroundings. Of course, the internet allows for a plethora of inspiration… but sometimes I find that when I disconnect and am alone with my thoughts, that my best work is conceptualized.

If you hadn’t been a graphic designer, what do you think you would have been when you grew up?
When I was young I wanted to be a veterinarian. I’ve always been an animal lover. But, given my tendency to faint at the sight of blood, I’m not sure that career path would have suited me. I think that if I was not creating art for a living, I would love to be some sort of event or wardrobe stylist.

What blogs are your daily reads?
A few of my favorites are Creature Comforts, Design*Sponge, Emmadime, and Sweet Thing.

Tell us a little bit about your adorable family.
We live in a little beach town in Southern California. My husband, Sam, works as a sales manager for several clothing brands, and I work from home as a freelance artist/illustrator….and more importantly, a full-time mom to our one-year-old daughter, Rylee. She’s our world! We have a Himalayan kitty named Bam, we could eat Mexican food every day of the week, we love the ocean, we love adventures, and we love Sundays…because that means we get to spend the whole day together.

As a busy mom, any tips for staying stylish when you’re on the go?
Know your go-to pieces. I have about 10 pieces in my wardrobe that I consider my “staples.” On a day when I have to run out the door and don’t have time to thoughtfully pick out an outfit, I look to my staples. For me, it’s my black skinny jeans or vintage cutoffs, a casual tee, and ankle boots. I know that no matter what, I can look put-together if I choose from the basics. You can always add flair with accessories!

Is there a spring trend you’re particularly excited about sporting?
Bold stripes and black-and-white graphic checks and motifs (Marc Jacobs Spring 2013…obsessed).

Since you’re a San Diego native, what local shop would you recommend hitting up to nab your style?
There is a shop called HOME on the coast highway that has a great mix of old and new.

Kelli styled her namesake dress for an art show by pairing it with the Contemporary Kick Booties, Tights for Every Occasion in Black, Full Course Load Bag, Hollywood Thrills Sunglasses, and the Hit the Flourish Ring. You can find more of Kelli’s faves here!

About Turi

When Turi isn’t blogging, you can find her nose behind a book. But reading isn’t her only pastime. She loves running (cue jogging stroller), taste-testing pizza and burgers, and working on the next great American novel. Her latest homage to all things literary? Her son is named after writer Dashiell Hammett. How apropos.
