This Dutch damsel, Laura, is the brains and beauty behind the blog The World Looks Red. She calls Amsterdam home, where she studies media production and works as a translator. Her blog is a wonderland of vintage inspiration, brimming with pretty outfits and romantic backdrops. Read our interview with Laura, and swoon over her retro namesake dress and all her hand-picked ModCloth favorites.
Are you from Amsterdam originally? Do you feel like the city has a specific style?
I’m originally from a small town in the south of Holland. In high school, everyone dressed the same: expensive polo shirts and [name] brand jeans. I always felt like I didn’t belong. I made my own clothes and I was always browsing the town’s only secondhand shop. Once I got the chance, I moved to Amsterdam. Amsterdam is such a fun and vibrant city! The city doesn’t have a specific style aesthetic, but I would say anything goes. I think the most popular style over here is the sort of Scandinavian-style minimalism. Overall, the Dutch are pretty conservative when it comes to clothing. I wish people would dress up a bit more, have a bit more fun with fashion!
If you were to live on the set of any movie, based on style, which would it be?
I wouldn’t really be able to name one based on style, but I’ve always said I’d love to live on the set of The Dark Crystal. It’s my favorite movie; I’m a huge Jim Henson nerd. That whole set is so beautifully made — they basically created a whole new world with weird little plants and animals. I wish movies would still use actual puppets and animatronics instead of soulless CGI. Sorry, I turned your question about style into a total nerd rant.
When you’re not blogging, how do you spend your time?
I work as a translator: I write Dutch subtitles for English and Swedish TV shows. I also write for an online shopping website. Next to all of that, I’m still in college! In my spare time, me and my boyfriend like to visit flea markets and music shops, and when we’re at home, we watch a lot of TV. We just started watching Sex and the City again, for like the fifth time.
Do you have any resolutions for the new year?
I say this every year, but I want to eat healthier. I love fries, onion rings, anything deep fried. I should really start eating healthier so that I have more energy. Another thing I promise myself (and my boyfriend) every January is that I’ll finally stop being so messy. Yeah, right.
You’re in school, right? What are you studying, and what do you want to be when you ‘grow up?’
Yep, I study Media Production. We learn about all aspects of media: TV, radio, magazines, book publishing. I’m specializing in online media and photography. I’m in my last year now! After that I hope to be able to keep doing the work that I do: I love to write and I love the variation in the things I do. Writing, translating, photography, fashion…I’m fine with the way things are! And of course I couldn’t imagine not having a blog, so I’ll definitely keep doing that for a long time.
Tell us the story behind the name of your blog.
When I started a blog, I wasn’t creative enough to come up with a good title, so I let my iTunes playlist decide for me! I put it on shuffle and the first song that came up was “The World Looks Red” by Sonic Youth. Totally random, but I decided that was good enough; I never expected people would actually land on my blog anyway. The title is a bit confusing now because I don’t really like the color red that much.
What are your daily online reads?
I really like Elsa Billgren, Hannah and Landon, Liebemarlene Vintage, The Cherry Blossom Girl, and just browsing blogs in general. I can spend so much time just clicking from one blog to another.
