The Style Gallery is a great new way for you to view, love, and share outfit photos. It’s meant to showcase all the expressive, creative, and inspirational personalities of our community!
If you’re a retro revival sort of girl, you’ll love Marianne’s blog, Esme and the Laneway. Her outfits will steal your heart with their nostalgic silhouettes from eras past, and, after perusing her posts, you’ll be searching your makeup bag for that perfect shade of red lipstick and practicing your old-school updos so you can get her look. So peek at her perfect pin-up namesake dress and her fabulous ModCloth faves before you read our interview with this vintage vamp.
In your wardrobe, you seamlessly blend styles from various decades. What’s your favorite era of dress?
Thank you! At the moment I love 1940s dresses, and the 1930s, too. I love the prints of the ’40s and the glamourous, longer line of the ’30s. But now is a good era too, in that we can pick and choose form the past and mix it with amazing new things!
You have a covetable collection of vintage – any tips for keeping your wardrobe in tip-top shape so you can get wear after wear?
Well, I handwash a lot of my vintage things, and take care to dry them flat, out of the sun. Hanging wet clothes can be bad for them, stretching the shoulders and stressing seams, and the sun here can damage them within an hour! I also hang them on smallish hangers that don’t push into the shoulders, and try to find plenty of room for them so they aren’t all squashed onto a rack!
How did you learn to do your amazing retro hair and makeup?
Practice, and watching tutorials on it! I am only starting to put tutorials up now. Here is a link to my everyday makeup video. I will be putting up a couple of hair tutorial videos in the next week or two.
Do you blog full-time, or do you have a day job?
I have a day job! Blogging full-time – and all the work around blogging, such as writing, photography and styling – would be fantastic though!
If you could live on the set of any movie, what movie would that be?
Hmm. That’s hard to chose! I think the Marie Antoinette set would be pretty special, maybe with some Tim Burton rooms down unexpected corridors!
What are your favorite blogs to find inspiration from?
At the moment I am really enjoying Elsa Billgren’s blog Need Help Dressing, as I love her vintage wardrobe and beautiful photos, and always feel happy after a visit – something I love in blogs! I am also reading The Cherry Blossom Girl, one of the first blogs I ever found and a favorite from the start.
Marianne styled her namesake dress for a summery Sunday brunch in Melbourne.
She dolled up her namesake dress with the Way to Bow Hair Clip, Ladybug in Waiting Necklace, Sonoran Sun Wedge, Hard Cordial Socks, the Upwardly Mobile Satchel, and Lipstick in Retrofuturist.
How would you style her namesake dress?
blogger of the moment, retro revival
I really wish I could pull these looks off. So timeless and beautiful. Fun post!
You can pull off any look you like, Christina! You decide what works for you and what you want to wear! Be confident and you can do/wear anything. 🙂
Hooray! This is one of my favourite blogs ever! Esme always gives me such lipstick inspiration!
I love her style! Beautiful and vintage-inspired to the max. 🙂
Wonderful! Two of my absolute favourite vintage inspirations in one post! I’ve been reading Marianne’s blog for some time now and I’m so pleased to see her dress on ModCloth – it’s adorable! Funnily enough, I did a blog post about both Modcloth and Esme & the laneway a while back…
How have I not heard of her blog before? Marianne is such a dreamboat; thank you modcloth for such a great choice! xo
Thanks for introducing me to her blog! I can’t believe I haven’t heard of it before, she’s darling!
I’ve followed her for a while– I absolutely love her style! Although the fact that she’s in Australia makes me wish for the opposite seasons after seeing her outfits. 😉
She is a true inspiration
How do you choose these? What a great feature! This probably isn’t quite what you’re looking for, especially since it’s not just one blogger, but check this out! http://www.bradsdeals.com/blog/

Thanks so much for the lvoely comments – and thanks Modcloth! x
I’ve been following your blog for a couple of years now and I adore it! It’s the only one I follow closely and I so understand your comment about feeling happy after a visit. That’s exactly how I feel with yours! I always can’t wait until I see what you’re wearing next! Thanks so much for all your hard work on it. ~ Jess from Melbourne too! =)
