Meet Shareen of Vintage Mavens

When we happened upon Shareen Sarwar‘s blog, Vintage Mavens, we fell hopelessly in love. Her outfit photos have movement, color, drama, and even humor. She shoots her exploits with her husband, Jorge Rubiera, who is also the business partner behind her online shop. This dynamic duo designs and sells clothing inspired by their home in Miami, but Shareen was born in Bangladesh and raised in New York.

We were lucky enough to get some exclusive behind-the-scenes pics that show Shareen and Jorge during a photo brainstorm session, as well as snaps of Shareen working in her New York home. You’ll want to see how she daringly styles her namesake tunic as a mini-dress, and of course peruse her fierce ModCloth faves.

Do you feel the vintage shopping in Miami is different than other cities? What was the most awesome vintage find you’ve ever nabbed?
Every year, my husband and I go on our annual cross country buying trip, and ever year, I realize that the vintage in Miami is unlike any other city in America. Miami’s vintage is a true reflection of the city. The vintage is usually full of vibrant colors, quirky prints, and made of lightweight fabrics. In my opinion, it’s the best city to shop for vintage.

What was the most awesome vintage find you’ve ever nabbed?
The best piece I’ve ever found? An ivory, crochet lace wedding dress with a micro-mini hemline.

As a designer, what inspires you creatively?
I’m mostly inspired by Miami.  When I launched the first We Are Vintage Mavens collection, I was living in Miami Beach, which was reflected in the garments I produced for the clothing line – fun crop tops, micro-mini dresses, and pastel colors. Now, we live in Little Havana, which has a very strong Caribbean, Central, and South American influence. I’m already working with different prints and fabrics that reflect that.

What are your daily online reads?
BBC News, NPR, Women’s Wear Daily, and 60 Minutes. I have a degree in politics. I still like keeping up with world events.

If someone were to play you in the movie of your life, who would it be. Why?
Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes. I just simply adore her and her style.

What’s one thing we’d be surprised to learn about you?
I am a huge science-fiction and comic book fan. When I’m not working, I’m usually reading my old Marvel comics or watching Star Wars in my office.

Any secret dreams for the future?
I’d love to live on a farm one day. I love animals and working with my hands. Are there any vintage shop owners that operate out of a farm? Probably not. I can be the first.

When our interview was over, we asked Shareen to style up her namesake tunic. With her penchant for micro-minis, she opted to accessorize it as a cocktail dress, with one eye-catching pop of color.

Shareen accessorized the tunic with Walk Star Bootie, Roping Elegance Belt, Just Press Plate Ring, and I’ll Take My Limo Bag.

About Turi

When Turi isn’t blogging, you can find her nose behind a book. But reading isn’t her only pastime. She loves running (cue jogging stroller), taste-testing pizza and burgers, and working on the next great American novel. Her latest homage to all things literary? Her son is named after writer Dashiell Hammett. How apropos.
