The Style Gallery is a great new way for you to view, love, and share outfit photos. It’s meant to showcase all the expressive, creative, and inspirational personalities of our community!
Whether you remember Starr of A Thought is the Blossom from the ‘chain letter dress’ or you’re new to her site, one thing is certain – this blog is where it’s at. Starr will quickly make you feel like a friend due to her approachable take on vintage and picturesque posts that let you in on a world all her own. Her outfit photos, which seem like an oasis of sun dappled knolls and babbling brooks, are set in her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas. But this lovely lady doesn’t spend all her time blogging; she also balances her time between hitting the books and working in a restaurant. Read on for a behind-the-scenes interview and a first glance at Starr’s namesake dress and favorite ModCloth picks.
What’s the story behind the name of your blog?
I borrowed it from an Emerson quote: “Thought is the blossom; language the bud; action the fruit behind it.” Coming up with a blog name was tough because it’s so permanent. I just applied this quote to the process of online communication. A blog is a place where your “thoughts” come to life. The “language” represents the relationships that come with that. The “action” is the follow-through. I started my blog as a way to promote my Etsy store, Action is the Fruit, which I closed last year in order to focus on school. It all seems so silly when I explain it, but that’s what it is.
What are your favorite blogs?
I used to follow a lot more, but right now school has me on a limit. A few favorites are Wish Wish Wish, Liebemarlene, Wayward Daughter, Foxtail and Fern, all of the Delightful Dozen girls (past and present), and all of the Red Velvet Girls.
When it comes to vintage, is there a particular era you’re most inspired by?
I’m probably most interested in American culture in the second half of the nineteenth century. I’m interested in life before and after the Civil War and the fashion and decor that came with that. Oddly enough, I’m most interested in the men’s fashion from that era. I love that the looks were structured and functional in very simple colors. As far as what I actually wear, the cinched waists and full skirts of the ’50s work best for my body.
What are you studying and what would you like to do once you graduate?
I study public relations and art history at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I don’t have any post-grad plans just yet. I’ve still got a couple of semesters left, and I’m still learning so much as far as job possibilities go. Right now, I’m focused on lining up a good internship and getting to graduation. I’m flirting with the idea of a post-grad study abroad teaching English in Taiwan, but that’s not set in stone yet.
What’s your favorite thing about living in Little Rock? Is there anything about the city that you think would surprise people who haven’t visited before?
Definitely the sense of community here. There are so many artistic people in Little Rock who are always willing to collaborate. Both the film and fashion communities are growing (we finally have a Fashion Week and an annual film festival), which is creating a lot of great opportunities. For a first time visitor, I definitely recommend getting outdoors. Go canoeing, visit a cave, or spend a day at the lake. We’re The Natural State, so most of the tourist fun is outdoors!
Tell us a little bit about your puggle puppy. What’s the funniest or cutest thing he does? Has he learned any tricks?
Louie!!! I got him for my birthday from my boyfriend. He’s sweet, loyal, and insanely silly, and he’s got the most hilarious underbite of all time; his bottom teeth are always hanging out. As far as tricks, we’re still working on the basics. We’ve mastered “sit” and “outside” so far, but right now, we’re working on “chill.” Fingers crossed we get that one soon.
Starr schooled us in style by letting us in on how she’d wear her namesake dress to class.
She accessorized her namesake dress with the Siblings Flat in Big Sis, Bookshelf Bandit Tote in Herman, I Adore a Fedora, and Tights for Every Occasion in Light Grey.
