ModCloth x Epic Reads – Love, Becky Albertalli

Our epic partnership with Epic Reads is back in time for Pride Month! We’re featuring Becky Albertalli, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (you might know its silver screen adaption, Love, Simon). The Atlanta, GA, native is having one busy Pride Month, “In addition to Hulu’s Love, Victor, I’m excited to share Love, Creekwood with readers on June 30th. And I’m especially excited to be able to support The Trevor Project with my proceeds.”

And we are so excited that Becky was able to meet with us to answer a few questions! Keep reading for more on the Simonverse, page-to-screen adaptations, and Becky’s LGBTQ+ reading recommendations.

Fully Booked

Simon has become such a beloved book for the LGBTQ+ community – an honor that Becky does not take for granted. “I’m ridiculously grateful. Stories are tricky – they’re never going to resonate with everyone who reads them, and that’s certainly true for Simon. But it means the world to me that Simon’s story has resonated with so many people. Especially with members of the LGBTQ+ community, and especially teens. I’ve been so moved by conversations I’ve had with readers over the years.”

As for Becky, when it comes to LGBTQ+ reading recommendations, there’s a ton of page-turners that get her stamp of approval. “Oh, I have so many recommendations! I have way too many favorite books to list, but there’s a few recent releases I adore. Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender, Date Me, Bryson Keller! By Kevin van Whye, The Fascinators by Andrew Eliopulos, You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson, Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales, Verona Comics by Jennifer Dugan, and The Summer of Everything by Julian Winters (not out until August, but so wonderful).”

Into the Simonverse

Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man better watch out. With Becky Albertalli’s upcoming book Love, Creekwood and the new Hulu series spin-off, Love, Victor, she’s created her very own Simonverse! Like any universe, her characters are constantly growing and evolving. “I think at this point, the Simonverse characters have been with me so long, they feel like old friends. I’ve poured so much of myself into them. Love, Creekwood was so much fun to write, because I got to imagine my characters during a whole different chapter of their lives.”

And as for Love, Victor, new characters have taken on a life of their own, while still coexisting with Albertalli’s creations. “My relationship to Love, Victor is a bit different, since Victor and his friends were created by Isaac Aptaker, Elizabeth Berger, and the other Love, Victor writers. But I love these characters more than I can possibly explain, and the Simonverse is so lucky to have them.”

From Page to Screen

For many authors, getting the page-to-screen treatment is a dream come true. And Becky is no exception! When reflecting on what it’s like to see her work adapted to the screen, Becky is in awe, “It’s been completely surreal. I’ve loved getting to participate in the process, and I’ve learned so much about how films and television are made. I loved having the chance to get to know the actors and production staff, and there’s something so magical about standing on sets for fictional places I invented.”
