Keeping Time with Cold Beat

Don’t be fooled by first impressions, because if you’re going on name alone, Hannah Lew’s latest solo venture, Cold Beat, is anything but lifeless or arrhythmic. The blazing debut EP from the Grass Widow bassist and San Francisco fixture is a fast and curious mix of resonant harmonies and bright chord progressions reminiscent of her time with the post-punk band that rumbled through the Bay Area in 2007. Along with Raven Mahon and Lillian Maring, the trio forged a lo-fi, yet raucous blend of experimental rock, and quickly became known for a hands-on approach to nearly every aspect of their creative process, including colorful and imaginative videos for their songs.

This same spark ignites Lew’s solo work, as seen in her video for the title track, below. Grass Widow is still active, though its members are pursuing solo projects, like Lew’s latest EP, to which Maring lended her drumming talents. Playfully titled Worms, the release features 2 new songs and remixes of both. While Worms launched last November, Lew recently took to Cold Beat’s tumblr with news of 12 new tracks that she recently recorded for a potential full-length release, hopefully due out sometime soon. For now, you can check out the aforementioned video, and be sure to share your feedback in the comments below! — By Amy, Customer Care Lead Assistant
