With the plummeting temps and blustery winds swirling about this time of year, there’s nothing like the warm chord bursts and mellow, three-part harmonies of La Sera’s Katy Goodman to remind us of lazier days. In 2007, Goodman found underground success with the punk band Vivian Girls. The Jersey trio took root into the Brooklyn music scene, and like any unrelenting indie band worth its salt, the Girls amassed a following that Goodman still nurtures today with the ethereal sounds of La Sera.
The flame-locked songstress essentially is the core of La Sera, but the band hosts a pack of rotating members who’ve toured and recorded with the talented songwriter and bassist since 2009. Her more recent album, 2012’s Sees the Light, switches between swaying vocals and languid guitar strums on tracks like “Love That’s Gone” to the driving distortion on “Please Be My Third Eye”. La Sera’s overall sound suggests a range of influences, from 50s and 60s surf rock to 80s new wave and punk. While La Sera just wrapped a tour with fellow songwriter Kate Nash, you can stay up to date with her comings and goings here. If you’re into bands like Camera Obscura and Tennis, you’ll want to give La Sera’s records a spin! Take a peek below at her video, “Break My Heart.” It’s a bright and bold salute to earned heartbreak. — Amy, Customer Care Lead Assistant
