Where There’s Smoke Fairies, There’s Fire

Classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven has been quoted as saying, “Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.” Smoke Fairies, a London-based female duo,  seem to be the embodiment of that sentiment. Like their name would suggest, Smoke Fairies evoke ethereal imagery with their angelic voices.  Yet, these heavenly harmonies are drawn down to the ground with swampy guitar riffs inspired by the finger-picking and bottleneck-slide styles of the Delta blues, a genre of American music steeped in the sweat and tears of human hardship.

Take a gander at the video for their tune, “Frozen Heart,” and let us know what you think of Smoke Fairies. Are there other bands that you feel succeed in seamlessly combining two – or more! – seemingly disparate styles of music?

I really LOVE this sound, it reminds me of the Black Keys musically but celtic folk music or Jesca Hoop vocally.

Take a listen to the sneak peek of my new EP, it’s something all its own.. I think you might like it!

If the song was a moment: Amy Lee from Evanescence meets MGMT’s desert-dwelling cousins

Thank you for the discovery !
Beautiful voices, but very strange vid.
It sounds like modern celtic music, irish music, not so original.

Love this! They sound like Loreena McKennit, but the bluesy guitar makes it really interesting.
