With summer’s warm, gentle nights, who wants to stay indoors and watch movies on the TV? The drive-in theater is where it’s at! Find yourself a parking spot and set up that speaker, because we’re about to broadcast our first drive-in movie guide. Sure, it’s nice to put on your jammies and snuggle up with a film on a Friday night, but how often does that include socializing with classmates or meeting a potential sweetheart?

According to this BBC News article, fewer than 500 drive-in movie theaters exist in America today, down from about 4,000 in the decades just after WWII. With the emergence of the oh-so-convenient VCR in the ’70s, the drive-in was slowly forgotten. Luckily, a couple hundred still remain across the country for you and me to enjoy. If you’re not sure where your nearest drive-in is, simply check out this list!
Before you drive off, we picked this fun ensemble for when you meet up with your buddies to see a cheesy horror flick or the must-see ‘rom com’ of the summer. As for snacks, fill your bento box with healthy snacks such as this Hershey Kisses and pretzel concoction, sweet potato crisps, or spiced and roasted nuts.

Do you frequent a drive-in during the summer? Or, have you built an outdoor movie theater in your own backyard?
arts and life
I recently moved back to my hometown for graduate school and am delighted that I’m once again near my beloved drive-in theatre! I would go there all the time over summer with my high school boyfriend or a group of friends. Not only was the price less expensive for a double feature than a single movie at a regular theatre, but the ambiance was unmatchable! Once time, the film even burned on one of the features we were watching and we couldn’t see the ending…I know it sounds terrible, but it was so campy, I loved it! You really can’t get the same experience in a modern movie theatre. Can’t wait to spend a few more warm summer nights there again.
I wish we still had a drive-in in Cape Town. I remember going to them as a child, it was magical.
I love going to the drive-in! I feel so lucky to have one in my hometown, especially since they are dying out.
I’m always complaining that fashion takes a backseat in the small town I moved to a few years ago…but the GREATEST thing this town has to offer is a drive-in movie theater! I had never been to one before…and I absolutely LOVE it. It’s so adorably retro and so much better than making it a Blockbuster night. The best is that I can take my little lapdog with me. She loves the drive-in as much as I do!
The closest one nearby where I live is about 45 minutes away. Sometimes it takes an hour to get there with traffic. It is worth it though. We (husband and I, and sons) saw about 5 films there over the past few years. Should really go again while we can. It’s always so packed!
I love going to the drive in I used to live 5 minutes away from the one in Sacramento it’s great!
